Propane canister recycling help? How do I yank the stem out of a Coleman propane canister? [More:]I found recycling information on the coleman website. It suggests you pull the stems out with some sort of tire stem removing gadget. I bought one. Now what?

It just turns and turns and nothing loosens. What am I doing wrong?

This is the gadget I bought. Is it the wrong one?
You're looking for a Schrader valve tool.

This tool I bought seems to have one of those on it. But I still can't figure out how to yank the whole thing out- all I've managed to do so far is depress it.

The Schrader valve is normally screwed into the body of the casing acting as its valve body. In the case of a tubeless tire stem, or a tube inflation neck, the valve stem has threads internally and externally. You begin the removal by depressing the center pin of the valve to be sure to release any remaining air or gas under pressure in the inflation body (very important), and then, using the prongs on the small tip of the tool/valve cap, turn out the valve stem, lefty-loosey. In a tubeless valve stem, this could be 15 to 30 full turns, depending on the length of the stem.

small_ruminant, doesn't your area have a drop off depot for pressure containers and chemicals?

Is there anything that paulsc doesn't know? :D

arse_hat- yes, two saturdays a month from 10-3, far away from here. It's inconvenient. Supposedly if you yank the stem you can just toss these in your regular recycling.

Thanks, paulsc, maybe I just haven't turned it enough.

My keys are still missing, but they did find this || No that is not what it's about.
