These are a few of my favorite things [youtube][More:]
These are a few videos that are stuck in my head...
(1)Devo - Come Back Jonee
(2)Dresden Dolls - Truce
(3)Roxy Music - Ladytron
(4)Magnetic Fields - I Don't Believe You
(5)Mercury Rev - Opus 40
In "Ladytron", Eno is playing the modulator portion of an EMS VCS3 without an attached keyboard. He is using other instruments in the band as a sound source. At the beginning, he is using Brian Ferry's keyboard (or perhaps the unit's built-in noise generator, but I have my doubts), and at the end, Phil Manzanera's guitar. Since Eno is tapping into the mic line, the original instruments are still heard.

If you listen closely during the end, every once in a while, Eno lets a bit of the guitar's character through on his side for a very nice unison effect.

I seem to remember seeing an old film of you with Roxy, I think it was The Old Grey Whistle Test or something similar, and you were playing what seemed to be an ARP2600, is that right?

"No, I tell you what that was, it was essentially an EMS VCS3 synthesiser built into a unit that I designed. With Roxy you see, a lot of the time I was taking live instruments and feeding them into the synthesiser and treating them, so what I had was the basic synthesiser with some extra bits to help me... they are quite rough though, those early synths."

This synth was very popular among British bands, particularly Led Zeppelin and John Paul Jones.

I read in an Eno interview where he was talking about Roxy Music, saying he used to just sit there while playing and think "what the hell am I doing in this band"?

Sorry it took me so long to reply, but i worked a 14 hour day today...

mischief: what a cool anecdote! Now i have more trivial eno knowledge...this is more useful than you may think.

BoringPostcards: you are welcome...they were stuck in my head. I thought i should share.

hellbient: i heard that after one concert that eno must have been thinking that to himself...he decided to quit the band...and then recorded two of the best albums of the 70's (IMHO)...taking tiger mt. by strategy and here come the warm jets...

Schyler, once you begin to find that your work is interfering with your metachat comment posting, it's usually time to step back and honestly assess the situation.

There are professionals out there who can help you to break this destructive pattern. I know it seems hard, even hopeless sometimes, especially from the bottom of a 14-hour day, but let me assure you that many bunnies before you have slipped into the insidious Work-First habit, and then managed to fight their way back to sanity. You are not alone! Let us help you.
