My nephew is retiring from his job as a newspaper publisher.[More:]

Yesterday when he called me for my birthday, my nephew told me he was publishing a daily newspaper on some giant sheets of newsprint my brother picked up for him.

When I spoke to my dad in the evening, he told me the young lad had announced that he was retiring from publishing, at least for long enough to go on a family vacation to Rhode Island.

He told my sister-in-law that he thought it might be hard work, but what he really wanted to be was an auto mechanic, an artist, and a newspaper publisher all at the same time.

Seems reasonable.
I like his ambition.

My older son wants to work at the pound, the other wants to work at Walmart. Seems very reasonable. ;-)

The way I see it, if you're a newspaper publisher, you can do whatever you want with your time as long as you keep Redford and Hoffman on the president's tail, and then when you retire you can write a gloating, unsuperstitious memoir, unaware that removing Nixon hastened mankind's end by 10,000 years.

Is this the same nephew who made the comment about Matisse and the white space? If so, he's really fascinating. I would love meet him.

How old is he?

Does he accept unsolicited editorial submissions?
;-)

He's four-and-a-half and loves going to museums. Living in Alexandria, VA makes it easy for him to visit the Smithsonian, and he goes there every week with his dad and my parents.

Last week he was really keen to see the Modernism exhibit at the Corcoran, though I suspect his main purpose was to get a look at the rare Modernist streamlined, dorsal-finned Czech Tatra T77. He also likes the artists Joseph Cornell and Earl Scheib.

I'm seriously considering becoming a wandering balladeer. The fact that I can neither sing not play could be a small hindrance, but I'm already filthy, broke and drunk, so I've got that part covered.

I used to want to be an elevator operator. One in an old-fashioned fancy department store. I would wear white gloves.

My kid just announced that in addition to a paleontologist and zoologist, she'd like to be a screenwriter. She could use some contacts in the media. Please let me know when the Hughphew resumes publication.

He can be all three at the same time. He can publish one of those weekly car rags that advertise for individuals selling their own cars.

As long as he doesn't have to sit in on three-hour conference calls with Latin America, he'll be fine. Let me tell you, they're pretty boring. Especially when they mean you miss lunch.
