Reading the Charles Nelson Reilly obit threads made me think... There are few places these days where you'll find the kind of wit and camaraderie they had on Match Game. Except sometimes here and MeFi. So, I propose...[More:] that any BIG meetup must include an organized Match Game with a MeFite/MoFite/MeChan panel. Who would YOU like to put in those two rows of seats? IRFH, quonsar, who else? (And is Matt an adequate host or would cortex be more 'GeneRayburnish'?)
If it was Price is Right, I think you'd be the go-to guy for 'Come on Down..' wendell.

Thank you jon; of course Johnny Olsen (the first Price Is Right announcer before Rod Roddy) also did Match Game. In return, I nominate you for Richard Dawson's seat.

ahem... GET READY TO MATCH THE MEFITES!!!

Thanks wendell, but I alwyas saw myself as more like Chuck Woolery, or (in my wildest ambitions) Groucho Marx on 'You Bet Your Life.'

I'd love to see taz and jrossi4r play The Match Game. They're both quick and clever and both rule at double entendres.

Also, I am thrilled to find out you can get a 4-DVD set of Match Game episodes.

And OMG, mygothlaundry would be a hilarious contestant, esp. if the stories are true about there being a bit alcohol served behind the scenes. Jo Ann Worley was on CNN today talking about how they'd tape a whole week's worth in a day, and she said, "You never wanted to miss a Friday on 'Match Game' because they shot that one after dinner, after we'd all had several glasses of wine."

I always sort of sobbed inside that there is no way to have a home version of Match Game. The Gene Rayburn role would have to be a metachat thespian, I won't list them because I'll forget someone, but I will say TPS must be a contestant.

Gene and I share(d) a birthday. If nobody else will take him, I will.

Well thanks, iconomy. That's a huge compliment as you are no slouch when it comes to bringing the funny yourself.

There is nothing the mister and I enjoy more than a good Match Game rerun. Brett Somers is seriously one of my heroes. She and CNR had such a fabulous rapport. And I find the young Richard Dawson oddly sexy.

Apparently they used to film several episodes a day, with a nice break for a liquid lunch in the middle. My favorite episodes are the ones you can tell were filmed in the afternoon.

And I demand that all game show hosts return to the skinny microphone.

Gene Rayburn and I actually share a... fondness for knitting? Either that, or Johnny Carson.

And, I kiss you, ico... but you would be the bomb. How can we have a mecha Match Game?
posted by taz 28 May | 18:41
Sorry BP! Don't know how I missed your comment about the booze. Especially since it involved Jo Ann Worley. I love her!
posted by jrossi4r 28 May | 18:57
Nope, Gene Rayburn and I never shared a birthday nor a talk show host. (If it was going to be the latter, I'd want it to be Jim Rome, and I'd want Gene Rayburn to still be alive, thanks.)

I'll tell- we share a name. One of his names is one of my names (the one I don't go by). My full name is Raburn Boring Postcards. (We spell it "Raburn" in my family.) When I was a kid I always liked it because it wasn't every day you heard the name "Raburn" on TV- or anywhere else, for that matter.

i'd help write:
"Charles was mortified when he overheard Janine say he was BLANK like a bunny."

The only way to do this is if people all emailed their answers to the host to make sure there was no cheating. What do we win?

I actually share an alma mater with Jack Klugman.
posted by octothorpe 28 May | 22:36
I'm sorry, octothorpe, but none of our, uh, celebrities said "alma mater". That leaves you with... no matches for this round. Don't feel bad, though; we'll be sending you home with a lovely parting gift. Let's hear it for octothorpe, everybody!

Great sign, wendell!

I love Match Game. If only gameshows these days were so casual and fun. And boozy.
posted by me3dia 28 May | 23:47
...who else?

I dunno, Wendell. I remember Match Game, Hollywood Squares, and all the other Gold from WaybackWhen. And I remember Reilly as José Chung on a brilliant X-Files episode 20-some years later.

Thanks for reminding me.

I hadn't seen Reilly's obit.

*siiigh*

.

Sleep well, Charles.

Goodnight, Wendell and all.

Thanks.
