I'm no fan of hers, not because of who her parents are, but because she worked on the devil's campaign. (That said, I don't think it's a bad thing that she chose familial love and loyalty over politics, no matter how evil I think those politics are.)
But I think she's right -- it's a kid born to two (presumably) loving parents. The kid shouldn't be turned into a political football. It's not his fault that his grandfather is evil. And the kid shouldn't know his grandfather as evil -- he should know him as Grandpa.
(Also, I think it's the Cheneys that so far have already used him as tool, and I don't like that. But I don't like the Gay City News' snarky take either.)
On the other hand, it would be ridiculous to ignore the fact that gay parenting has been made into a political issue by VP Cheney and his cronies, in part to stir up socially conservative voters during campaign seasons.
At least we know it wasn't mud in her vagina.
Also, could someone run over to this thread and scream "e!"
Maybe i have the luck of knowing great brothers of lesbians but e all the way, easier, medical history, extra parent, legal coverage...
Keith Olbermann: "Heather Poe, Mary Cheney's partner of fifteen years, is not permitted any legal connection to the child whatsoever -- can't adopt as a second parent, can't legally exist. To the folks that keep that law on the books, let me see if I've got this right -- your political or religious beliefs are more important than this one kid having a loving, two-parent home. Not theory here, not abstractions... this particular little boy, on day one facing all the crap life has to offer him and everybody else. He doesn't get two parents and this makes you feel better about yourself how?"
Maybe it rained last night, I'll ask It's Raining Florence Henderson...
Of course, there are going to be people straight-facingly declaring that the Male Influence is SO important to a child's (especially a man-child's) development, that having TWO mommies with no daddy is indeed worse than having only one. An absurd argument, but one they will bring pseudo-scientific research to support.
Of course, the legal status of the kid's 'other mother' would only be really important in case of some emergency or problem facing the birth mother. Let's just use all our prayers and wishes toward preventing such.
I see the baby's name is Samuel David Cheney, according to the news story. I was going to suggest naming him after the painter Childe Hassam, so alphabetically he could be listed as "Poe-Cheney, Childe."
And the kid shouldn't know his grandfather as evil
Aww, but it would so cute to hear him calling Dickie "evil gramps". Or, like, Mary saying to him "No, we visited Grandpa Poe last weekend, it's Evil Gramps turn to take you to the swings today."
