This is a picture of my grandfather waking up in the California desert in January 1943. His division in WWII (6th Infantry Division also known as "The Sightseeing Sixth") was ordered to the desert of Arizona and California where they were trained with the expectation that they would be sent to fight in North Africa. They ended up assigned to the South Pacific instead and so moved from the desert to jungle training in Hawaii.
