I just got fired. [More:]After being on the job for, I shit you not, a grand total of 90 days, I was fired.

For having the stomach flu.

Thank you, and good night.

PS. My boss fired me over the phone.
Oops. I meant to make everything after "I just got fired" a more inside.

I'm sorry to hear that; you don't still have the flu, do you? I hate being fired. You're okay, right? Go get a massage.
posted by Hugh Janus 18 May | 12:32
Holy cow! That stinks!

As, um, you are no doubt aware.

I'm so sorry to hear it.

Do you still have the flu?

The bright side is that you never want to work for the kind of shitlips that fires you for having the stomach flu.
posted by Divine_Wino 18 May | 12:39
OH, that sucks, brina! Your ex-boss is a dickhead.
posted by gaspode 18 May | 12:44
Yay, "shitlips!" I love hearing that word. Reminds me of junior high school.

What gaspode said.
posted by arse_hat 18 May | 12:51
The naive 19 year old here asks "Wtf? How can they even do that?"

And what Divine_Wino said. That's bullshit, but hey, they probably did you a favor in the long run.
posted by CitrusFreak12 18 May | 12:56
Bosses can really suck. Rough break, but sounds like you're well rid of them.
posted by jonmc 18 May | 12:56
My sympathies, brina. Divine_Wino nailed it though, they don't deserve you and you deserve better.
posted by Luminous Phenomena 18 May | 12:58
I should have known better than to go to work for a convicted felon.

Now that's a song lyric, brina.

PS. My stomach is still upset, but I'm back on solid foods. And also, thanks for all the condolences. What MeCha means to me: wonderful internet hugs.
posted by brina 18 May | 13:01
It's also a one-sentence story.

Ohhh, Brina. I'm sorry.

Ah crap, I'm sorry.

I sometimes wish my company would fire me.

Anyway, you'll go on to better things. Sorry. Good luck!
posted by shane 18 May | 13:03
Exactly what DW said. To hell with those idiots. And take care of yourself brina. (((((brina)))))

With any luck, you were contagious, and the boss'll get it too. Only worse.

When you go back (find a reason) You'll want to be sure to wipe snot all over your hands before that final handshake. Make it one of those smarmy-politician sincere two-handers.

Awww, sorry to hear that, Brina.

Sorry you got fired over something so ludicrous, brina. You're well rid of that place.

holy crow! what bastards! i am at a loss of words but i hope things pick up! they have to!
posted by Mrs.Pants 18 May | 13:45
WTF!?

Seriously, how old was your boss again???

Man, it's good to know you're rid of that place. And good riddance to that stomach flu too--take good care of yourself, brina.
posted by hadjiboy 18 May | 13:48
brina, I'm sorry.
posted by LoriFLA 18 May | 14:10
Fuckwads, they totally didn't deserve you. I second getting germs all over the place if you visit (you probably have desk stuff to pack up, no?)

Feel better soon!
posted by casarkos 18 May | 14:42
sounds like a blessing in disguise. Feel better!

@CitrusFreak: many jobs carry a probationary period during which the employer can terminate for no cause whatsoever.
posted by mischief 18 May | 15:05
And that probationary period is usually (pause for dramatic effect) 90 days. Badboss made it in right under the line, but he's probably reading a Dilbert Human Resources manual that tells him "beware of employees who take off sick time even before paid sick leave is available". You may have had stomach flu, brina, but the system is sicker.
posted by wendell 18 May | 15:27
Well, in an at-will state, that "probationary period during which the employer can terminate for no cause whatsoever" is, um, forever and always.
posted by dersins 18 May | 15:40
So sorry, brina. I once got shoved out of a job for the exact same reason during the 90-day probationary period as well.
posted by scody 18 May | 15:55
Hi all. Thanks again for the sympathy. A few notes:

I do work in NY, which is the at-will-forever state of hell.
My 90 days was technically up.
The company was so small there was no HR department.
Consider that, in three months, I had two paychecks bounce ... well. It's probably for the best.

My boss said, and I quote, "You were alive yesterday, and you're still alive today" as a prelude to firing me. Isn't that just lovely.

(Think I have moved from "denial" into "anger," no?)
posted by brina 18 May | 16:21
colorado is an at-will state as well.

on top of which, i've discovered that colorado can and will refuse to pay unemployment benefits if you are 'terminated for cause'. meaning: employers will go to any and all lengths to prove somehow that they fired you rather than laid you off.
posted by lonefrontranger 18 May | 16:51

I know that you feel hurt and extremely pissed right now. BUT a place that bounces paychecks, bounces fuckin' paychecks, is a fly-by-night operation that doesn't deserve you.

I've worked for some real shitheads in my life, places where I got the dry-heaves before I went to work every morning.

But I've never worked at any place that bounced paychecks.

Fuckin' sucks, man. But you'll get a better job.

employers will go to any and all lengths to prove somehow that they fired you rather than laid you off.

That fuckin' blows. Here in New York, most former employers just kind of suck it up and let you collect 'cause it's cheaper and takes less time and hassle.

lfr: do you have a legal aid society where you are, a group of young idealistic lawyers who could help you win this case? Or maybe you could get a big law firm to help you pro bono. You'd get the best legal talent in your area. Go for it!

It's a shitty thing to happen, but you're undoubtedly well rid of them. *big hugs*
