Big surprise of the nominations is that Curtains, which got pretty lousy reviews, got a Best Musical nod over Legally Blonde, which everyone figured could win because of its commerical appeal. Now I think it will probably be Spring Awakening.
And of course, the real sad thing about not being nominated for Best Musical is not getting to do a musical number on the awards show. Best publicity in the world.
If O'Byrne gets it for the Coast of Utopia, I shall eat my pencil (it's okay, it is a small one). I must be the only one odd because the NewYorker was raving about him too. In the first part, I hardly noticed him and in the other two seemed very uncomfortable in the role and unable to communicate any of the passion Herzen had in Stoppard's work. And really, fuck-hell-no, how can a thick Irish accent NOT disassociate the character, a noble russian? Fer chrissakes.
I am going to see the Moon for the Misbegotten this week, yay. I promise not to jump on the stage to grope the Spacey. On second thought, I do not promise anything. Enough with the promises thing.
But you know which show I really, really enjoyed this season? Gutenberg the Musical. Have you seen it? Very funny, smart, light, provocative. Yep, not the usual stuff.
I didn't get around to seeing that, and it closed on May 6th. Too bad. I still need to see Grey Gardens and Curtains, to have seen all 4 Best Musicals nominees. And of the Best Plays, I've only seen Little Dog Laughed. Yes, I have some work to do!
