What's for dinner? [More:]I fancied a 'proper' dinner tonight, so there's a beef stew simmering on the hob.

2 cloves garlic, minced
1 onion, chopped
2 carrots, chopped
About a pound of stewing beef, cubed
Beef stock, about 300 ml.
Dried mixed herbs (or fresh, if available)
Salt & pepper

In a large-ish pan, heat some olive oil. Add onion, garlic and meat. Stir it about until the meat is browned. Add carrots, stock & dried herbs. Season to taste. Put the lid on, and simmer until tender. To thicken, add a shake of Gravy Granules (fab invention).

I think I'll have this with pasta and broccoli.

It took me about 5 minutes to prepare (thanks to my Nicer Dicer which I used to chop the onions and carrots) and it'll take about an hour to cook, which is fine, I've got stuff to do while it's cooking.

Gordon Ramsay has a show on TV where he tries to get people to cook real food instead of eating processed stuff, and a column in The Times. I try my best to eat well and cook from fresh whenever I can, and I love his recipes.

So, what are you having for dinner tonight?
Dinner- I haven't even decided what I'm having for lunch yet!

I dunno. But for lunch I'm going to go nuke a slice of pizza from last night and have a beer.

Chicken livers. German potato salad. Summer squash. Leftover sweet onion fritters.

Penne with ricotta and asparagus. Unless I'm too tired after class to boil water, in which case it will be manchengo, crackers and almonds. Either way, there will be enough wine.

Dinner? I'm still eating my breakfast: a chili omelet with rye toast.

I have three different chilis that I cook. This one happens to be "mom's style". While my mom did cook a decent chili, I improved her recipe quite a bit.

Supper will depend heavily on what I find at the grocery. Or, if I don't get there, a tuna salad with all sorts of fresh crunchy veggies.

Well, for the first time in at least three weeks we won't be having a proper dinner. I told V. I really wanted the deliver-to-your-house Crepe Special tonight, from the friendly crepe place a few blocks away. It's incredibly good (and big! and full of cheese! and yummmmm!), but I've been trying very much not to overdo it on ordering this, as it's not very caloriewise, and I also just don't want to get jaded with it.

So, instead, I'll tell you what I cooked last night: spaghetti sauce with mixed ground beef and ground pork, onion, green pepper, tomato, garlic, cilantro, tomato sauce, and wine, cooked for quite a while, served over #10 spaghetti... and topped with little dabs of yogurt on top omg. We can find this really super-thick, fantastic and delicious yogurt here, which is what we put on top of our pasta+sauce on our plates (instead of cheese) last night - and omgwtfbbq? - I feel like I ate three times as much as I should have. It was only two (fairly small) servings plus salad, and that was all I ate all day, but man... I felt like a (happy, happy) little piggy.

I'm still hungry. I think I shall repair to the bodega for spicy peanuts and whoopie pies.

Actually... I misspoke. There have been plenty of days in the past three weeks when we didn't have a proper dinner... just not any where we ordered food, or ate convenience food, or bad fast food (I specify "bad", because I think some fast food here is okay - we've had souvlaki while out and about pretty much once a week for the past three weeks). And we've had several evenings of scrambled eggs, leftovers, or whatever. Sometimes we don't end up eating anything much.

"with little dabs of yogurt on top" : Details like this is what makes cooking fun.

A caribou coffee mocha bar.

I'll be out and about. But I did have a stouffer's french bread pizza and apple for lunch. I would have made a salad but I am dealing with plumbing issues and didn't want to make any effort.

Hubby will be having stouffer's when he gets home. He's okay with that.

Cold spicy peanut noodle salad with snow peas, broccoli, and shredded carrots, topped with crispy fried tofu and chopped roasted peanuts.

Or possibly a spinach salad with roasted vegetables, blanched green beans and broccoli, a soft-cooked egg, and avocado.

Or The Fella might come home with his own ideas. We'll see.

It's only 2:18 in the afternoon here. Dinner is hours away and I have no idea what I'm having. All I've had today is diet coke with lime. (I normally don't eat anything until early evening especially when I'm doing yardwork because it makes my stomach wonky.)

I'll probably grill some chicken.

paulsc, german potato salad is DISGUSTING. It is dressed with WATERY SNOT.

I had beef stew for dinner as well! It was pretty good. I wish I had made a stir fry instead, though.

That's an awful thing to say about someone else's dinner.

German potato salad is delicious, and superior to all other potato salads. Because it's German.

I like the style of (maybe not German) potato salad that is made with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing instead of a creamy sauce. Tangy!

Last night's dinner was a sandwich with havarti, tomatoes, onions & avocado on sourdough. I might have it again for lunch in a few minutes.

If I could eat avocado every day for dinner I would. Oh, delicious avocado. Yum!
posted by gaspode 14 May | 15:57
PY, that's the kind of potato salad that I like, too!

Leftover mac-and-cheese which is being made into chili mac. Although Grace makes me pine for some German potato salad. (It's always good because it's potatoes!)

We just decided on:

* Scallops with peas and pea shoots
* Lamb chops with rosemary
* Steamed super-thin asparagus
* Wild rice (maybe)
* Red butter lettuce salad (maybe)

most of which I was actually going to make last night, but I was tired and mopey and we ended up going out. So it'll be a little overly fancy for a Monday night dinner.

But that list reminds me that I should go pick the rosemary, which I forgot to do when I went down to pick some lemons.

I love living in California. With a person who gardens.
