100 Reasons to Get Rid of It A list to help you with your spring cleaning. [More:] This site has quite the list of US charities to donate used things to. I know I'm taking our newspapers and some old blankets to my local pet shelter in the morning.

2. People burn 55 minutes a day looking for things.

Really? Does this jibe with all of your experience? There is no way I spend that much time looking for things. Maybe 10 minutes, like if I need a certain shirt and have to see if it's in the laudry, but that's it.

It doesn't with mine. 55 minutes would be the rare thing that is really lost, and it would be the very outside of what I'm willing to spend looking for any one thing.

Any one know of a good charity that takes computer parts? I've got a few old mobos, video cards, optical drives, etc. that I can't be bothered to put on eBay, but I wouldn't mind donating en masse.

I just had a huge clearout of stuff and I realised how little I actually need in my day-to-day life.

I just got a call from the Heal Cancer Charity, they're collecting the two pieces of furniture I'm getting rid of tomorrow. They're lovely pieces, I'm sure they'll sell easily and I'm glad the charity will benefit.

Even when I was at my most cluttered, I did not spend 55 minutes per day looking for stuff.

I suspect that one would easily hit 55min. if one lived with a partner and children, because you'd end up helping everyone else look for their lost stuff, and the possibility of someone else moving your stuff increases in a way that it wouldn't, necessarily, with roommates, who would have stronger boundaries (mostly) about that sort of thing.

That's my guess, at least. My time spent looking for other people's stuff definitely increases dramatically when I'm at my family's home, or living with a partner.

55 minutes does seem high, but if you really added together all the minutes you spend a day looking for something, it might surprise you. A minute to find the remote, a minute to find a pen, a few minutes to find a phone number that you wrote down on a srap of paper and left somewhere... Tidy childless single adults would be at the bottom of the scale. 20 minutes might be a good average for me.

Supply children in foster care with luggage.

This one made me wince. Not because it wouldn't be a good thing to donate your old suitcases to such a cause, but because it's necessary for anyone do so. You know these kids aren't going to Disneyland.
