Eep! I just pulled something in my back. There was a noise involved. Back muscles aren't supposed to make noise. Am I correct?
That sounds bad. Ibuprofen and lay down on a firm supportive surface. Damn.

I am not a doctor, nor have I played one on TV. That said - no, muscles generally don't make noise.

Whereabouts on your back are we talking about?
posted by bmarkey 14 May | 22:48
Lower. General vicinity of the butt. There are frozen peas in said area.

Ouch. Sorry, pup. I wonder if maybe you stretched a joint in such a way as to make it crack, like a knuckle?

Muscles? No.

Everything else in my back? Yes yes yes. I make more noise than rice krispys when I stretch. Its quite normal (for me).

Hm, I don't think it's normal to have frozen peas in your back. Maybe that's the problem?

Oh no!

I am not a doctor (as you very well know), but pretty much everything I've read has said that, in dealing with back injuries, moving around (gently!) is good and the best way to feel better quicker. Bed rest tends to exacerbate the problem.

Obligatory Yoga Journal link.

Also I had frozen peas for dinner. They were very good.

My back (and all the rest of my joints, especially my hips and knees) makes all kinds of interesting popping noises all the time. For me, it's the same as cracking my knuckles. (And it is hella amusing when my boyfriend hugs me and about three vertebrae and both my shoulders pop at the same time.)

But this may not be what you did. And if you're hurting (which my noises never really do) then it's probably something else.

In which case I have no advice, only sympathy and possibly some chocolate. Chocolate fixes everything.
