An excellent essay (with paintings) about American painter Edward Hopper, whose fascination with cities, empty space, and isolation led to some of my favorite paintings.
I like his paintings very much.

"That 70s Show" did a great homage to 'Nighthawks'

Yay, BP! I think we are going to see that exhibit next Sunday at the MFA -- if I can get tickets, that is. I live about an hour from Boston.

Funny story: When I was in Chicago, I was going to skip the Art Institute in favor of some of the many other museums in town. Then I read somewhere that they had "Nighthawks," and I decided I had to see that in person. After traipsing around endlessly in this vast cavernous place and finally finding the American wing and the proper gallery, I was met with a note: "Edward Hopper's Nighthawks is currently on loan to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, for an exhibition opening May 6."

That's a funny story only because you're going to get to see it, Miko- otherwise it'd be a heartbreaking one!

Great stuff... he's always reminded me of de Chirico's paintings.

Oooh! I love Automat, BP! I first saw it on a day trip to Des Moines when I was at the writers workshop.

I'd never thought about it before, Zack, but I wouldn't be surprised if de Chirico was an influence on Hopper.
