Tommy Thompson apologizes This cheered me up -- a Republican candidate for president apologizing for failing to oppose employment discrimination against gay workers.
I don't buy it. The actions of his party speak louder than words, and after looking at that video, I don't think there's any way he "misunderstood" the question. He just regrets being honest about his bigoted beliefs in public. (Again.)
I didn't watch the debate, I think it is near pointless this early in the game, but I wish that question had been asked of every single one of the debaters.
No no -- I don't buy it either. It just cheers me up that a Republican candidate thinks he has to apologize. That the landscape has changed so much that that kind of political calculus around LGBT issues now occurs.
"MR. HARRIS: Governor Thompson, same theme. If a private employer finds homosexuality immoral, should he be allowed to fire a gay worker?
MR. THOMPSON: I think that is left up to the individual business. I really sincerely believe that that is an issue that business people have to got to make their own determination as to whether or not they should be.
