Sounds like Rod Stewart in drag. In 1983 quirky-hot blond Bonnie Tyler's raspy, whiskey and cigarettes voice launches one of MTV's most memorable videos. (youtube link)

With public school imagery, gothic overtones, and images of greasers, American footballers, young boy's skin, épée, 60's Brit horror films, young boys in underwear, Catholic redemption, secular rejection of sensuality, and suggestions of older woman and younger boy sex, the video (downloadable video) [More:]

was an 80's cultural touchstone(mp3).

Max Weinberg of Springsteen's E Street Band and Late Night's Conan O'Brien show did the drumming and Rick Derringer who produced (arguably) the best of The Winter Brothers albums played guitar. Jim Steinman, who wrote Meatloaf's hits wrote and produced.
I still think it's a horribly overwrought song and even moreso the video. That "bright eyes" effect is just frickin' creepy. I never liked Bonnie Tyler after this, but I quite liked "It's A Heartache" (was that really 1977?? Six years before "Eclipse"???) and actually thought she would do well as a pseudo-country music singer like Olivia Newton-John before she got all Grease'd up and Physical'd.

Now, twenty-odd years on, this song probably could have worked for me, just not with Tyler, who actually seems totally uncomfortable in the video to me now. Imagine it as an 80s power ballad duo between Stevie Nicks in her lace and Annie Lennox all manned up in her "Sweet Dreams" outfit. With a cameo by Rod Stewart. Heh.

As a side note, from experience, lesbians love you if you play "It's A Heartache" and gay boys will love you if you play "Eclipse". If you play one after the other, you will no longer you will be fired as a DJ from that club.

Ah, memories of one my first forays into music.
Bonnie Tylers greatest hits was one of the first albums I ever owned. I'm not ashamed to admit it either.

when I was a kid I thought 'It's a Heartache' was Rod Sterwart. And on his last 'covers' album Rod The Mod does a version of it. He's now imitating his imitators.

btw, if anyone wants to subject themselves to a nearly 40-minute ambient/granular synthesis piece derived exclusively from works written and/or produced by jim steinman, click here

OMG, Jazz dancing NINJAS! What the heck were they thinking with that video?

I don't think Jim Steinman was capable of writing anything that was underwrought.

Actually, I kind of like this tune... which amazes me, because I ordinarily hate that kind of thing. I particularly enjoy the Dan Band's version, as featured in Old School.
