Is it just me or is JRun going down more often than Sad Kermit in the video for Hurt?
Yep. JRun is back.

Ditto, heehee.

Didn't Matt say he was getting upgraded to new servers or something? Either that, or new features maybe? Mefi seems to give servers the JRuns for awhile until everything settles down.

The servers were upgraded/moved a few days or so ago. He has a thread open in Meta to report buggs, so I am pretty sure this is unexpected even by matt.

A few hours ago I was able to access AskMe and MeTa but not the blue. Got the fancy new Flickr-esque "Massage" error page. Post to status blog said he was doing some maintenance, but that was hours ago.

Gah, am I going to have to WORK today? WHAT. THE. etc.

For $35 a month, I expect better service.

I managed to get a few MeFi pages loaded, but the JRuns are definitely back. (Were they ever gone???)
posted by deadcowdan 29 March | 08:23
The JRun is comfortably familiar, but I wish the server would mix it up a little once in awhile. How about an "Unknown entry event," like in Sphere?

From last week's MetaFilter podcast:
It'll be a great test. If everything isn't awesome, then it's totally my fault... There's so much capacity now, that if things aren't, like, amazing, if they keep dying, you know or whatever, being slow, it's totally my code that'll be at fault. Which is good to know.

Ruh-roh, Shaggy.

I kid because I love.

They were gone for a while. When the site crashed you didn't get anything. Now they're back.

I'm confused. Why on earth is JRun back on the scene? Matt switched to Apache a while ago (and things vastly improved). Switching from Apache back to JRun makes no sense, since Apache actually works and JRun isn't, I think, recommended even by Macromedia for use in production. Matt works in mysterious ways.
posted by matthewr 29 March | 09:47
I *think* Apache is running as the webserver, but JRun still provides the interface to the database.

I never said I was original.
posted by iconomy 29 March | 09:57
Yeah, danostuporstar, that makes sense.

Hmm, I may have been talking nonsense when I said Macromedia doesn't recommend Jrun for production. Though I'm sure I read somewhere that JRun for Coldfusion is intended to be a development-only server, like WEBrick is on Rails.
posted by matthewr 29 March | 10:07
As I understand it, even when the webserver was switched from IIS to Apache, it was still just Apache fronting the JRun. Apache has no inherent ability to run J2EE apps.
posted by chrismear 29 March | 10:20
And according to these system requirements (see 'Supported Application Servers'), you have to choose between JRun, WebLogic, WebSphere or Oracle Application Server. None of the gratis open-source options are officially supported. So if MetaFilter's already paid for a JRun license, it's probably as good as any to stick with.

See Jrun!

Run, Jrun.

Please run, Jrun.

In all fairness, Matt does do his development on the live site.
