aww, Georgie and Gracie. You're right mudpuppie, it is happy-sad. I like how the last line quotes a person saying that the birds get over the loss of their eggs quickly. How do they know? Do birds cry or lie in their nests wallowing in grief?
That's a good question, LoriFla. Do they just return to the now empty nest and think "Hmm, something's different."? Or do they just know their eggs are gone? And if they are, what's to stop them from laying another clutch? I've heard birds can do that, as a safety feature should the original clutch fail. Maybe there could be something people could install in that spot so no future nests can be built there.
I would think they would be distressed, but who knows. The person stating that they get over it quickly is probably right. Although, I thought it was a funny thing to say. How do we know if a bird is sad or not? They don't frown. ; )
This story kind of reminds me of a baseball pitcher that threw a ball at a nesting osprey. We were at the game this day, but thankfully arrived after the brouhaha. The ospreys were named Ozzie and Harriet. Like George and Gracie, a lot of people were attached to the birds. Unfortunately Ozzie died.
