Back in the day, we used to joke about the name of William Dement, a psychologist who researches sleep. I vaguely recall a Marine noncom whose surname was "Peace," too.

In Maxed Out, a book about the credit biz that I just read, the author says, in an aside, that the name 'Visa' was chosen because it's pronounced the same, and means the same thing, in nearly every major world language. None of that 'Bite the wax tadpole,' 'Coke brings your ancestors back from the dead' stuff for them, no sirree.

The vice principal at my high school was named Richard Rammer (pronounced Raimer).

Why would you do that? Why would you subject yourself to hundreds of high school students snickering about "Dick Rammer"?
