Stupid iTunes AskMecha [More:]I've Googled, looked through AskMefi, and tried the Apple support site (which is down, but damn near unnavigable), so I'm wondering if anyone can help me.

My wife and I share the home computer, Windows XP. We both have an iPod. The iTunes account is set up under my profile. Wife wants to be able to access iTunes and all our music from her profile as well. Can this be done? I've tried the sharing thing, but I'll be damned if I can make sense of it.

What to do, in near-slobbering idiot terms?
tr33hggr, iTunes drives me batty. I'm not using my iPod to its full potential and probably never will because I'm dense when it comes to tech stuff.

Maybe this will help until other knowledgeable bunnies offer advice.

Thanks Lori. Not so much though. We want to share the same library/playlists, and much of that applies to Mac users. /envy

tr33 is frustrated!

I think on Windows iTunes by default keeps the library in c:\documents and settings\user\my documents\... Look to see where it is in the preferences menu, advanced tab

So when your wife is logged in, open iTunes and then in the preferences select advanced and change the directory to your library's location and voila. You should be in business. You may need to, in Windows give access to your wife's account access to your music folder. But I don't know about that since I've forgotten anything I know about Windows when I have a Mac. If that's too complicated, you could move your library from your folder to another place on your computer accessible for all users like c:\music. Moving the files means you will need to repoint your library on both your account and your wife's account in Windows.

It shouldn't be that complicated, but it is because the default "my documents" is for each user.

I just made 2 playlists in iTunes.
One called "(my name)'s iPod" and one called "(wife's name)'s iPod." Whenever I rip a cd or download stuff, I just drag it on to the appropriate playlist.

In your iTunes prefs, just check that you want your iPods to update these playlists and/or any ones you want to share whenever you plug in your (or her) iPod.

You still have all the songs in Artist/Album/Song/etc. folers, automatically, but you also have a giant, managable playlist of every song you want on your iPod.

I would put all the music in \shared documents\whatever, then you can access the files from each profile and each of you can manage your music as you see fit, including being able to remove songs from the library in your own profile without affecting the other's profile.
