I thought the first person shooters just exploited the myth that "one person can make all the difference" and gave the powerless drones a meaningless exercise in being powerful and important - at least in terms of killing other powerless drones.

That's rich, because it's true.

And even "team" games are biased toward individual point/upgrade aggrandizement. There have been games that have emphasized cooperative elements, but they haven't been very popular.
