What's a 17yo girl to do in The City? My wife had a brilliant idea (she has many). Farm out our daughter to wife's old school chum who lives in Oakland and runs a successful graphic arts studio there. Daughter has an interest in art, so[More:] this seems a good fit. She will have a day or two on her own and has our permission to BART over to San Francisco and bop around.

So, Bay Area Bunnies, what can I suggest that might be interesting to a with-it young queer person, within reach of BART and busses (we also turned her loose, sorta, in Manhattan; she's pretty street-smart).

Of course, anything I suggest, she won't do, but I have to go through the motions here.

BTW, she has taken a couple self-defense classes, and has the sense, generally, to not get into situations in which she might have to use this instruction.
I was just talking to a neighbor who grew up outside of SF, and she was talking quite charmingly about being in high school and driving into the city with friends, and getting coffee in North Beach, and feeling all sophisticated about it -- but that, really, they got coffee in North Beach because there was nothing else they could do. :)

But there are some great cafes and bookstores in North Beach, and it feels very European, and I know my high school self would have LOVED walking around there. (My current self loves walking around there, too.)

SFMOMA is either in the midst of, or about to run, a show on Picasso and American art (showing his influence on it, with both his works and the American works) that sounds really cool. The Asian Art Museum is also wonderful. Both museums are free on the first Tuesday of the month.

Can all creative kids adopt you&your missus? Not all parents would be so cool. :)

If she likes bookstores, she should go to City Lights. She should check their event calendar, too. I don't recommend Ghirardelli Square. I never found it appealing. Fisherman's Wharf is interesting but extremely tourist-oriented.

Try telling HER that. . she acts like she's in the worst prison imaginable, in our home, and in this small burg. She can't wait to get as far away as she can.

I have been compiling a very general list to entertain a visitor in April.

There's also Berkeley- when I was 17 I hung out on Telegraph and, well, drank cappucinos. Same as North Beach I guess, but different feel.
