20 March 2007

A tall ship, some small birds and a bit of this 'n' that [More:]I took my camera into the office today to get some pictures of the tall ship that's moored outside. It's an amazing vessel and too wasbig for me to get it all in one photo, even from the 9th floor of our building.

It was very cold today, windy too, so there was less birdlife than normal around the dock, but I managed to get a few pictures of the critters that brighten my lunch hours.

Just a little slice of London life here.
Is that a cormorant?

Yes. Or a grebe. Or a coot. Or a mallard. Or a swan. Or a pigeon. There are lots of birds around there.

ej: great pix! She looks so deserted. Where is her crew? Are they going to open the ship for tours while wharfside?

By the way, for your captioning purposes, this is the binnacle. (A sextant is handheld, so you can walk around with it). The binnacle provides a solid, lighted, weatherproof, and magnetically neutral housing for the compass. The red and green balls can be slid back and forth to counteract the ways in which the ship's rig and other local influences mess with the compass' response to the earth's magnetic field.

oops, and by "this" I mean this.

Thanks Miko.

It was very quiet there today. This morning there was a man in uniform guarding it. When I took the photo of her, Myrtella was commenting that he looked cold, but as she said it, another crew member brought a peacoat out for him to put on.

There were people wandering around it yesterday taking pictures, and also lots of crew. I'll have to check the Canary Wharf website to see if it's going to open for tours.

Nice, Jan!

Where are the pics of the men in uniform?

p.s. I dig the crazy Jetsons space-boat y'all have!

I'm sorry Specklet, they were all hiding down below. The only human life I could see was the person (I couldn't even tell if it was male or female) lying on the deck.

My apologies to you, BP and anyone else who was hoping to have a perv at some hunky matelots.

Yeah, I liked that sleek commuter (?) boat, too. I liked the bird pictures, too, but it's a bit poignant to notice the floating trash with the lovely birds. I love your pictures, Jan! That ship is simply gorgeous.
