Not a good week for new movies [More:] The only positive review on RT for Premonition: "Somber but soulful, Premonition has a strong dramatic performance by Sandra Bullock and a gimmicky plot that doesn't grate until the end."
Premonition was suggested last night, I said no way. :) Too bad Bullock can't seem to pick a decent movie to star in. She's very likable IMO. We saw Black Snake Moan. Christina Ricci and Samuel L. Jackson both gave top-notch performances.

I want to go to the movies tonight, but there doesn't seem to be anything worth seeing. I may see Breach before it leaves the theaters. I want to see Music and Lyrics because I like Hugh Grant. Maybe I should skip the movies and drink some green beer at the bar, but that doesn't sound appealing at the moment. I'm not in the mood for crowds.

I know what you mean about Sandra Bullock. I want to like her as an actress but the parts she gets are horrible. Her character in Crash was alright but the rest of the movie was trite and just plain dumb.

mischief, I forgot about Crash. I can't believe I haven't seen this movie. I've had opportunities, but I felt meh about it. Just plain dumb? Maybe I'll skip it.

I am a horrible movie goer person and am way too critical of most movies, as such I have to be dragged kicking and screaming to see anything new as it all looks so godawful

What about the Wind that shakes the barley, Ken Loach's new movie? I understand it has not opened everywhere but NYTimes and NYorker are raving. RT is not very negative either.

carmina: I meant the wide-release movies. Some of the independents though look really, really good. The latter though do not seem to play well in Vegas (except A Scanner Darkly types), so I usually have to wait for them to show up on NetFlix.

carmina, yes! I want to see Wind that Shakes the Barley. I think you linked to it not too long ago. It isn't playing here yet, but soon as, I'm there.

Has anyone seen The Lives of Others? I have it on waitlist. I was hoping they would show it here since it won the academy award, but it hasn't turned up yet.

I stayed in and watched The Dreamlife of Angels. It reminded me a little of the films that the Dardenne brothers have done, but better. Maybe because it was set in Belgium with young people down on their luck. Rent it if you don't mind the lack of a strong plotline. It's a fantastic movie about friendship.

300 turned out to be more of a manual for training pubescent kids to run rampant than a historically accurate interpretation of Sparta, with well choreographed fight scenes. (Some movies were never meant to leave the Comic world.)
The most grating part of the movie was the way the Persians were depicted. (My mother asked me today if Hollywood knows that there are “white” people in Iran. Guess not. Or at least they seem to think there weren’t any at that point of time.)
And the similarities between what was happening onscreen and the reality of the situation on the ground is just mind-numbing; it’s like the White House’s PR department got in-touch with Warner Brothers and decided to collaborate on a pet project together. Yeeesh! This movie really sucked big time. I don’t know how the audiences in the States and around the world can eat this shit up. (The theatre over here was pretty silent, which is an indication of not a lot of enthusiasm for the film, but they were cheering Viggo by the time he lops off that guy’s head in LoTR. No reaction like that for this film, thank goodness.)

I don't think a huge percentage of people in America realise that Persia is Iran. And if you think Iranians are mistreated by Hollywood, you should try being English.
