Upcoming MeCha Radio... for all you history buffs out there, or people who may be interested...[More:] This upcoming Saturday I'm doing a slightly unorthodox radio show that is based around radio clips from World War 2. These clips are from the radio stations that were broadcasting news at the time - BBC, CBS, NBC, RRG (Radio Berlin) and others. Interspersed with this are songs from that era. The whole show is a concept that I have that'll be explained in greater detail on the 'casting day.
The reason for the FPP is that I thought that people who might not normally tune in would appreciate a heads up.
It will be 'cast this Sat. Mar. 17 starting at 10am Pacific/1pm Eastern/6pm GMT and goes for 2 hours.
pupster and mods: apologies if I'm not supposed to do this. Wasn't really sure, but if it goes against rules, please feel free to delete this post. Naturally, no harm was intended.

Cool idea Zack and no problem with the heads-up.

Fantastic! I confess I've heard some previews and it promises to be fascinating if not gripping, especially for those of us with relatives who were there (My mum was born just outside of London in '43, and my gran played piano in London dance halls during the Blitz), but also for anyone with an interest in this period.

I'll be listening, Zack_Replica. Thanks for the heads up.

That would be (though I'm pretty bad at this time zone stuff) 4am on Sunday EST. If that's right, can I please ask for a re-broadcast a little later? I don't know if that's against the rules or otherwise a hassle, but I'd really love to hear that. I mean *really* love to hear it.

Gah, I'm out seeing Pans Labyrinth that night. Still, if I set Audacity up, I could possibly record it for future listening. It sounds like an excellent set.

Gecko - nope, it'll start Saturday, 1pm Eastern and run until 3pm.
I was going to edit the whole broadcast into one mp3, so it'd run like I want it to, so after it's done I'll put up a link to it. I'll probably put it up on SendUIt or something... depending on how big it is.

Mate, that would be great. I really want to hear it, and I would like to play it to my father in law too. So if you could put up a link, that would be great. Thanks.

Yeah, a link would be awesome neat.

zomg! i love stuff from that era, thanks for the headsup Z_R. i'll make a special date with the computer on saturday morning / afternoon.

a good friend of the family who served as a sort of surrogate uncle/grandfather figure to me as a kid was a WWII bomber navigator. i grew up listening to old 78s of the era and going to the air force museum in dayton, ohio with him.

for you younger lot - WWII seems to be rapidly receding in national consciousness these days owing to things like the gulf wars and so on, but keep in mind i was born only 23 years post armistice. the way i interpreted things back then was that WWII was the last war the US got into with any sense of direction and/or doing the right thing (not that this made it right, or even true, but at least it made sense to the public). M.A.S.H. was on primetime making satire out of the korean conflict, and vietnam was pretty much unmentionable.

dunno if any of that makes sense, remember those are political notions from the mind of a ten year old.

and yes, i would pay money actually to have that as an .mp3... did i mention my SO is a history major? he would just flip. i'm going to try to figure out how we can listen to this together, altho he works saturday mornings/afternoons.

Why do I suspect that this webcast will have a full house of 10 listeners with several more turned away? I know I'll be in one of those two groups.

Other random related thoughts:

I wonder how much of WWII-era music the RIAA labels still control?

My 86 year old dad fought in WWII and if you believe Tom Brokaw's "Greatest Generation" hype, you've never met him.

Yay! Sounds awesome!

No problem with the heads-up. The rule is that can't announce specific tracks ahead of time, but you didn't do that.

I'll be out of town, I think, so I too look forward to the eventual rebroadcast.

Sorry, Zack_Relica, I should've guessed that you guys would have an EST too. Our EST is GMT +10. Your EST is GMT -5, so that would be (*runs out of fingers*), em, 16pm. So I suppose it really is 4am on Sunday. Bummer.

Wow what a lot of interest! Cool!

Rebroadcasts - can definitely happen. I'll do it in a different time slot so others can listen in.

Releasing the shows as mp3's - My plan is to pull the whole show together as a single mp3 and edit parts of it so it flows better. As it's 2 hours long, it'll end up being larger than 100 meg (probably 170+) which is the limit for services such as YouSendIt and SendUIt, so I'm thinking once I've broadcast part two, I'll put both mp3's on a CD and send them to whomever wants them. That won't happen for a couple of weeks, so listen to them, see if you'd like a copy and then email me and let me know and I'll do a mailout. Money? Nope, definitely not taking money for this.

Gecko - ooops! I forgot you're waaay over there. I'll see about a redo maybe a Saturday night or something like that.
