*just spent about 5 minutes attempting to fit the phrase And Cortex Closed The Thread to the rhythm of Horton Hears A Who but gave up in a fit of renewed laziness*

And now I'll never get a chance to tell that guy that beer + food coloring = green beer.

Also, I've see a "No Fatties" T-shirt, except the "No" was crossed out and "Yes!" was inserted. My friends made a bunch for their "7 Deadly Sins" party - it was the most popular shirt.

I refrained from posting this in the AskMefi thread. Do I get a cookie?

I want to know what Ask Me thread y'all are talking about! *whines unbecomingly*

A thread about where you can find green beer in NYC, I believe.

I hate it even more when it goes down, now. It's like the difference between seeing your cousin stabbed and seeing your brother stabbed.

LOL.

And I also like around 5:30-6:00 ET, when everybody leaves work and it gets better.

nerdy and sturdy DO NOT rhyme with 30 /brit

You don't have to be British to think that nerdy doesn't rhyme with thirty. But, as slant rhymes go, it's pretty close. They're both alveolar plosives. Close enough for a limerick, I think.

How does nerdy not rhyme with thirty? Do you really bite that 't' off so viciously, clamp down between two voiced noises for an unvoiced moment just to make a point of it?

I mean, really? Not just "of course" certainty here, but "I recorded both words and compared the wave forms with control features" certainty.

(Adjusting also for extra-American dialects of English and specific regional variations. Show your work.)

Me personally? Nah, I'm kinda mumbly.
posted by box 13 March | 23:55
cortex - have you never even heard a British person? I could come and visit. Yes, most of us really do talk like that, and we don't say an unvoiced 't' just to make a point of it.

Dialect. A Chicagoan would say "take thirdy third street," so it works for me, but someone else would say/hear two different sounds. Say "d" and "t" -- the constant sounds, not "dee" and "tee" -- to yourself very softly, and note where your tongue and lips are. They're very similar sounds. To me, the t has an extra hiss that the d doesn't, or if you will, "d" is a kick drum, "t" is a snare. It's very easy for me to mingle them, esp. when I'm tired.

I don't believe British people really exist, is the thing. (Or I might just be being very, very contentious about silly things for the fun of it. I'll cop to that.)

Then again, if it rhymes in Wolfdog's dialect, it bloody well rhymes, eh? Unless he's a freakin' non-existent person too. Dammit.
