IANAD I strained a hamstring last Thursday night, and I've been stretching it and using a heating pad on it. It wasn't getting better, so today I researched it on the net and found I was doing exactly the wrong thing. I should be avoiding strenuous activity, elevating and icing my leg, taking ibuprofen, and wearing a tension bandage to compress the muscle. I bought a tension bandage today and it brought immediate relief. I think from now on I won't rely on my intuition when it comes to doctoring myself.
Yeep! PRICE - protection, rest, ice, compression, elevation. Those are owie, though. I'm glad you're feeling better!

Glad it worked.
But I hope you won't re-diagnose and treat yourself with Internet advice for other things.
I've banned myself from looking up symptoms, because I always manage to convince myself that I have Cancer.

HEAT IS BAD FOR SOFT TISSUE INJURIES (but you already know that now ;-) If it hurts and is hot, cooling it down will generally make it hurt less. Heating it up will make it hurt more.

Also, time is definitely of the essence with soft-tissue injuries - if you can get a cold pack on the injury within seconds, you can lessen the damage to a huge extent.
