LOL, unexpected oral surgery! As you may recall, pi had some wisdom teeth pulled in December...[More:]So lately, I'd been noticing a bit of pain in one of the holes. I knew quit irrigating it a bit sooner than I should have, out of sheer laziness, so I expected I might have trapped some food in there.

I called the dentist this morning, and they said, "Sure, we can take a look at that, no big deal. Just come in around three." Sweet, I thought, no big deal, right? So my first clue that I'd gotten in for more than I expected was when they asked for me to pose for an xray. They told me that I had a dry socket resulting from some food being in there, but it would take no time at all to take care of it. We could do it now or on Friday. I'm usually of the mindset that says why do later what you can do now, so I said sure, go for it and sat down in the chair.

Then, out came the needle. After seeing me squirm with pain, the dentist said, "would you like some gas?" I meekly assented. Before I knew it, I was high as a kite and they were digging away in there. Now, I'm on Vicodin again (it does nothing for me) and I've got dressings packed in the hole. I'll be having mac 'n cheese for dinner.

This is not the direction I expected this afternoon to take.
Oh no, pi. That sounds painful.

Good wishes for speedy healing.

Thanks Lori, I'll look to your little blue bunny for comfort and snuggles!

LOL and oral sugery shouldn't be used in the same thread. My dentist wants me to see a specialist about a root canal. I'm avoiding it.

Oh, sorry for the pain, pie. I hope you heal quickly!

ACK! Sounds like a bucketful of no fun pi. I've managed to avoid anything other than routine cleaning and xrays for years. Knock on wood.

Yikes...Good on you for following up though. And, regarding the vikes not doing anything for you, my understanding was that when you need the pill for real live pain, it's not really going to have the "recreational" effect. Save one for once the pain is gone, maybe then you will see what the fuss is about? heh.
I should note, btw, that I am a ITGUY with a History degree, I could be totally wrong about that whole thing.

Don't. I'm not sure how root canals got the reputation they did. The whole point of the process is to make sure that the tooth is stable.

This is far less traumatic than what happens if you ignore the problem -- either the tooth rots away to where it can't be saved, so they have to yank it out with a pair of pliers, or it, and the jawbone, rots out badly that the tooth falls out, meanwhile, leaving you in excruciating pain, and quite possibly killing you from systematic infection.

If your at the root canal stage, it means that a cavity has reached the root. It will soon, if it hasn't, cause a root infection, which will hurt like mad.

Seriously -- root canals sound horrible, but once it is done, you still have the tooth, and the nerves are gone, so the tooth itself won't hurt. This is much better than a gaping whole in your jaw, which is what an extraction leaves you with, and much, much better than a massive infection eating away your jawbone (and sanity.)

What eriko said about root canals. I've had a couple now and they're less painful than a cleaning by a bad hygenist. Thank goodness my dentist employs good hygenists, but you understand what I mean. And man, the sheer relief when the root canal is done is awesome.

Ditto on the root canal comments.

Pi, I'm so sorry to hear about that! Dry socket SUCKS.
