MP3 Shuffle-a-gogo [More:]I finally got around to hooking up my MP3 player to run through the stereo, and I thought it was as good of a reason as any for a round of Shuffle-a-gogo.

10 songs as they turn up on your MP3 player in shuffle mode.

1. Hot Chocolate – Emma – A sexy slow burner of a song that I never tire of.
2. Loft – Tuesday – I had to look at the MP3 to see who this one. Mid 80’s British jangley pop from the Creation Records boxset. Now I want to see if there’s anything else to hear by this band.
3. Green – She’s Heaven – Chicago’s Green are one of the most hit and miss bands ever. One song can be brilliant, and then the next one can be a directionless waste of chords. This one rocks, and it’s a riff that frequently pops into my head unexpectedly.
4. XTC – Life Begins At the Hop – I had to recently pull some XTC and Beatles off the MP3 player since they were both dominating shuffle.
5. Beatles – Dear Prudence – What did I say about dominating shuffle?
6. Cheap Trick – Baby Loves to Rock – All Shook Up was the first Cheap Trick album I rushed out to buy right when it came out, so I have a soft spot for it. The first side of that album is probably my favorite album side, and this is one of my favorite songs by the band. Good, dumb rock.
7. the Distillers – Coral Fang – The last new punk band to totally kick my ass. Super powerful rhythms and catchy melodies. I listened to the album over 20 times before I realized that the singer was a woman.
8. Eddie Floyd – Love Is A Doggone Good Thing – Ahhh…the Stax boxset. One of my favorite things about shuffle is having gems like this pop up when you weren’t expecting them.
9. the Rosenbergs – Sucking On A Plum – I’m a power pop geek, so there’s a lot of it on my MP3 player. I forgot how much this song sounds like the Posies.
10. Knickerbockers – One Track Mind – Another song from a boxset – this time from the killer Nuggets box. This one of my least favorite songs on that box, and it still sounds good.
Kudos on the Rosenbergs and Hot Chocolate tracks! (Ever heard Urge Overkill's cover of that song, called "Emmaline"?)

Guided by Voices and Stereolab are my two shuffle-dominators... they both just have so damn many songs.

I'll post my own shuffle in a few minutes when I break for lunch.

1. Traffic Sound - "Meshkalina" Nice feedback drenched 60's Peruvian pysche, sounds vaguely Cream-esqe.
2. Old 97's - Rollerskate Skinny Nice Texan country-punk. the Salinger reference in the title is a plus.
3. Great Bear - Mist Long, spacey, drony track of psyche from a compilation of rock from India that consists of entries in a battle of the bands sponsored by a cigaette company. Sould be accompanied by bubbling bongwater.
4. Bugaloos - Senses Of Our World Yes, the cartoon Bugaloos. I have a soft spot for saturday morning. Interesting TV-ified pseudo-pyschedelia with chirping bird Moog effects.
5. Camille Howard - O Sole Mio Boogie
One of those weird things that happen when people try to combine trends. Sounds better than you'd imagine. I have no idea where i got this, but I'm a sucker for weird epiphenomena, so it must've caught my eye online.
6. Screamin' Mee-Mees- Squawk, Squawk, Squawk Nice primitive raw garage revival.
7. Panic' Button - Lovin' Horns Nice brass driven old-school funk.
8. Invaders - Spacing Out Rubbery bass-ed out funk. these guys were definitely into P-Funk and Bootsy and/or smoked a lot of weed.
9. Ronnie Spector & Joey Ramone - Bye Bye Baby The Queen of Rock and Roll does a nice bittersweet duet (also producer) with one of her acolytes. (RIP Joey, we miss you)
10. Gil Scott-Herron - The Bottle Nice dark meditation on societal ill's by the Godfather of hip-hop. Sweet beat, nice flute accents.

(this is what happen when you combine broadband, time, and an obsesssive mind, folks)

Work computer:

1. Archie Shepp and Dollar Brand - Fortunato I love jazz duos and trios, and I also love Shepp's tone. He plays here with Dollar Brand, bka Abdullah Ibrahim.
2. Charles Mingus - A Portrait of Bud Powell Early Mingus, from the years when he recorded for the Debut label. Mostly piano.
3. Norman Brown - Too High A Stevie Wonder cover, from one of the DJ Spinna/Bobbito-curated Stevie cover mixes.
4. Bill Laswell - Touchia Rem-El-Maya (2) From Boniche Dub, a Laswellized ambient/dub version of an album by Lili Boniche, a legendary Algerian singer/guitarist.
5. The Congos - Open Up the Gate Some of Lee 'Scratch' Perry's best work was with these guys, whose apocalyptic Rasta harmonies mesh well with Perry's stark, wide-open sonic landscapes.
6. The Originals f Marvin Gaye - Just to Keep You Satisfied A rather anguished rendition of a song made famous by Marvin Gaye, from the deluxe reissue of Let's Get It On.
7. Rahsaan Roland Kirk - Fugue'n and Alludin' From Kirk's Mercury boxset, this is a short trifle, but quite charming.
8. Nightmares on Wax - Survival I don't listen to as much downtempo as I used to, but this song (and Carboot Soul, the album it appears on) is a stone classic, and NoW is a longtime favorite of mine.
9. Ras Michael and the Sons of Negus - Truth and Light Ras Michael's group of Rastafarian nyahbingi drummers is already amazing, and the Rastafari Dub album is a high point of dub and Jamaican music in general.
10. Kasai Allstars f Tandjolo - Koyile/Nyeka Nyeka From Congotronics 2, which reveals that Konono Nr. 1 is not the only Nigerian thumb piano and homemade amplification combo.

1. A Sunny Day - Donovan
2. Absolutely Sweet Marie - Bob Dylan
3. A Day Without Rain - Enya
4. A Little Bit Lonesome - Kasey Chambers
5. 20th Century Fox - The Doors
6. (It's All Over Now) Baby Blue - Grateful Dead
7. A Million Tears - Kasey Chambers
8. (Exactly Where We're From) - Mirah
9. A Hard Day's Night - The Beatles
10. 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover - Sandra Bernhard

I don't feel like commenting on any of these tracks, nor do I think that people here need any more info. I have some esoteric stuff but on this roll of the dice, pretty common tunes. . .

Ladytron- International Dateline From their last album, Witching Hour. I still prefer the one before that, Light & Magic.

Mareva- Miss Hinano Cool, retro French(-language) pop chanteuse that I found because me3dia posted a link to one of her videos a few months back.

Primal Scream- If They Move, Kill 'Em Dark, shifty beats under what sounds like music from a 70s action flick. From their best album, Vanishing Point.

Syd Barrett- Clowns and Jugglers This song must have influenced Robyn Hitchcock, especially the almost-spoken phrases and almost carnival-like feel of the song.

The Dickies- (I'm Stuck In A Pagoda With) Trisha Toyota Fun, silly power pop pretending to be punk.

Aphex Twin- Petiatil Cx Htdui From his underrated Drukqs album. A quiet, echo-y solo piano piece.

Nine Inch Nails- Starfuckers, Inc. (Reznor, Clouser, and Ogilvie remix) Keeps the percussion from the original song, adds a spooky Skinny Puppy-esque synth arpeggio, and lots of growly crunching noises under the verses. I'd forgotten this was in there.

Smashing Pumpkins- Snail From Gish, the album that made me a fan.

Vic Damone- Something's Comin' Because a dose of bouncy lounge music is something just what the love doctor ordered.

Martha & The Vandellas- Love (Makes Me Do Foolish Things) A slower, more soulful song than they are usually known for.

1. "Mystery Science Theater Theme Song Version 1a" -- OK, I'm a big nerd. Whatcha gonna do about it?

2. Mum - "Asleep on a Train" -- Been listening to Mum a lot lately. Seems to fit the mood. The group was originally recommended to me in an AskMe thread. (Thanks ab3).

3. Sir Lord Comic - "Wha'pen" -- From a great album of Reggae instrumentals.

4. Bill Monroe - "You'll Find Her Name Written There" -- High Lonesome

5. Beastie Boys - "All Lifestyles" -- Not a bad release from the Beasties. Get their Criteron DVD of videos if you see it.

6. Weezer - "My Name is Jonas" -- What can I say. I love a good waltz. "The workers are going home!"

7. Aphex Twin -"Xtal" -- From "Selected Ambient Works 85-92"

8. Milton Banana Trio -- "Barquinho Diferente" -- A nice piano samba piece.

9. Marvin Gaye -- "Flyin' High (In the Friendly Sky)" -- There is something other worldly about What's Going On.

10. Pedro Belisario Orchestra - "el Bamban" -- and we end with a little Latin number.

After Forever - Emphasis Ah, how appropriate that this is first, given that this is my favorite band by a long shot, and I just bought tickets to see them at their first US show in October!

Lacuna Coil - Honeymoon Suite I like to say that Lacuna Coil is the band Evanescence wishes they could be.

The Cranberries - Wanted Wow, haven't heard this in a while.

After Forever - Face Your Demons 757 songs currently on this iPod, and two AF songs show up in the first four. It knows what I like.

Rush - Manhattan Project Man, what a good song. I'm gonna have to come back and listen to this after this comment.

Braindance - Refracture Braindance self-categorized themselves into a genre called "Progressive Darkwave." I think they're pretty much straight up goth/industrial metal, but it's good stuff either way.

Queensr˙che - Revolution Calling Old skool, bitches.

Autumn - Summer's End Hit-and-miss Polish female-fronted (of course) metal. This is the best song on the album I have.

Killswitch Engage - The End of Heartache I'm not normally into metalcore because all the songs sound the same but this one is really quite good. Probably not a coincidence that it doesn't really fit into the "metalcore" mold.

Batalion d'Amour - Ranny Anioł Poland has a lot of female-fronted metal bands. This is one of the better ones. Most of the songs are actually sung in Polish but this doesn't bother me since I pay more attention to the voice as an instrument than the words that are being sung.

Roxy Music - 2h.b. OK. Big Roxy Music fan here. Me and mr. g had this big thing whereby he was missing all of this (IMO) really important music and Roxy Music was one of those bands. (Also? He had/didn't know about a whole load of Bowie. *shakes head sadly*)

Mink - It's all fine. Mink were a band from my hometown. Kind of Velvet Underground-esque.

Low - That's how you sing amazing grace. I don't listen to enough Low.

The Streets - Don't Mug Yourself
. Heh, this reminds me of the first time I took my husband to NZ. We bought the cd on the way out of the country, and then listened to it for most of our roadtrip. It's great.

The Pixies - River Euphrates. Awesome.

Smashing Pumpkins - 1979. Oh yeah, that's a bit embarrassing. This was the album that made me stop listening to the Smashing Pumpkins.

Half Japanese - School of Love. My ipod LURVES Half Jap.

Radiohead - Airbag. I don't like OK Computer as much as most Radiohead fans, but this is a song I particularly like.

Tom Waits - Soldier's Things. I have to be in the mood for Tom Waits. Usually I like his stuff very much, but some days it just annoys me.

REM - You are the everything
. OMG this album (Green) came out when I was around 13, and I killed my cassette tape really quickly with the repeated listenings. This was the song I used to lie on the roof at night and look at the stars and listen to, because yes I was that sort of kid. Heh.

i have an ipod shuffle and thus no display, so this will be amusing. plus i have about 50gb of music, lots of which i am pretty unfamiliar with so... um. i have music from a jillion sources and really eclectic tastes, so this is kind of what you get -- slightly random on details. plus i'm not rabidly 'into' music, just appreciate what i have. and, what danf said.

1. Frou Frou: Beauty In The Breakdown
1a. some indie pop band i have no idea who... tho the track segues really well with the previous one.
2. Leo Kottke: a track from Try and Stop Me, no clue which one
3. Soul Asylum: Runaway Train
3a. some emo band i have no idea who. great vocals tho.
4. Daniel Powter: Give Me Life
5. Jimmy Eat World: The Middle
6. The Crystal Method: Born Too Slow
7. Snow Patrol: Grazed Knees
8. Angels & Airwaves: It Hurts
8a. some techno/electrofunk/reggae 70s-reload mashup dance track, i have no idea who (but i *really* like it, which means i probably got it from urbanwhaleshark)
9. Goldfrapp: Ooh La La
9a. 90's complaint rock - song is "Into The Sun" but i'll be damned if i can recall the artist at the mo.
10. The Knife: Like a Pen

Quasimoto- Astro Black: not the best rack on The Unseen but a good groove.

Erik Satie- Relache part 06: Lousy tagging on the Neuros so I don't remember the orchestra and conductor.

Atlas Shrugged, Part 2 Chapter 3; Uh, I uh, don't know how that got there...

Quasimoto- Return of the Loop Digger [Instrumental]: Like my previous iRiver player, the Neuros' shuffle feature is kinda of crappy. Either that or I'm given to coincidences. In fairness this is from a different album than the first track (though an instrumental version of the same album).

Another piece of Atlas Shrugged: Again technically from a different album than number 3, but I've got thousands of tracks on here.

Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant on XFM: One of the 2002 shows. Karl Pilkington in here somewhere too.

Another fragment of Atlas shrugged: WHAT THE FUCK NEUROS?

Ricky Gervais on XFM again, this one from 2003: this shuffle function is fucking useless.

Ayn Rand again: shuffle my ass

Ricky Gervais on XFM again: yeah ok, this thing's shuffle function sucks

Ayn Rand again: oh you fucking useless piece of shit

The Bonzo Dog Band- Rockaliser Baby: too little too late you piece of shit open sores firmware

Atlas Shrugged AGAIN YOU FUCKING SHIT BAG SHIT PLAYER oh at least it's one of the dirty bits. Objectivist sex is weird. very S&M, justified as anything but...

dunno what .mp3 players youall use (tho it looks as tho some are using your streaming radio feeds which i cant do @ work, no soundcard, etc.) but...

here's my question -- if you didn't have the luxury of accessing the track info on a display, do you know your musical collection well enough that you could name all the tracks on it 'by ear'? i'm certain jonmc could, but he's kind of special

i just wonder how engaged people are with their music collection.

or am i just clueless... wait don't answer that.

This skewed out more 80s than I thought it would. Hmmph, because I'm trying to update myself somewhat. Oh well. What can one do?

1. Flaming Lips - In the Morning of the Magician. Don't know this well but I'm getting more and more into them lately.

2. Janis Joplin - Summertime.
The classic. 'Nuff said.

3. Rick James - Superfreak
Yeeeah!! Still makes me want to dance around.

4. The Jam - Street Soul Music I like the Jam okay but not, perhaps, this song all that much. No idea where it came from.

5. Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians - Luminous Rose See above. I really like old, old Robyn Hitchcock but the newer stuff doesn't quite do it for me.

6. Patsy Cline - Crazy This, and Walking After Midnight, are on my list of desert island songs. I've been weeping into my beer over these for my whole life.

7. Jason & the Scorchers - Last Time Around
I wish I liked them more but actually I don't, really.

8. Psychedelic Furs - Pretty in Pink One of my favorite songs & bands EVAR. Even though they're so evocative of college to me now that they're almost painful to listen to, I still love them. And the memory of the time when we ran into Richard Butler in a Soho bar in the late 80s and my boyfriend staggered up to him and said, "Dude, you have no idea how many times I've had sex to the sound of your voice."

9. Elvis Costello - Every Day I Write the Book I will always love me some Declan MacManus. I even tried to name my son Declan but alas, was voted down.

10. Dire Straits - Heavy Fuel I go through periods every few years when I become a complete Dire Straits fanatic. Then I put them away again until the next time.

lonefrontranger - I'm totally cheating; I don't even have an mp3 player. What I do have is a CD of the random miscellaneous mp3s from my home computer that I made as a backup last winter. I put that into my work computer, set windows media player to shuffle and used those results, which also gave me the uh, whatever you call that data. EXIF if it was photos. Title & artist name & so on. There's no way I could name half the stuff - there's like 9 hours of music on there.

1: Maria Taylor: One For The Shareholder
2: Bob Dylan: The Mighty Quinn
3: ZZ Top: Master Of Sparks
4: We Are Scientists: It's A Hit
5: Fiona Apple: The First Taste
6: Craig Armstrong: Sly
7: Mylo: Destry Rock & Roll
8: Nine Inch Nails: Beside You In Time
9: Teitur: Let's Go Dancing
10: The Flaming Lips: Mr Ambulance Driver

BoringPostcards: Ever heard Urge Overkill's cover of that song, called "Emmaline"?
Yeah, that's a great cover version - they nail the whole mood of the original, which is no easy feat.

jonmc: Bugaloos - Senses Of Our World
That's great! It's weird, but the Bugaloos actually stand up on their own without the camp factor.

BoringPostcards: The Dickies- (I'm Stuck In A Pagoda With) Trisha Toyota Fun, silly power pop pretending to be punk.
That's the perfect description for this song. Those first two Dickies albums are regulars on my stereo.

gaspode: Smashing Pumpkins - 1979. Oh yeah, that's a bit embarrassing. This was the album that made me stop listening to the Smashing Pumpkins.
I'm not a Pumpkins fan, but this was the album that made me realize that they didn't actually suck. Although, I haven't heard this album in about 5 years, so I have no idea how it stands up.

safetyfork: Step on Chameleon - Drive Like Jehu
Wow, I haven't even thought about Drive Like Jehu in years. Seeing this on your list made me put it on the CD player. I forgot that this came out during the reluctant acceptance of CDs - printed on the actual CD is the phrase "CDs Really Fucking Blow".

Lentrohamsanin - Although I wouldn't want to listen your shuffle entry (although the Bonzos was a nice surprise) - your post sure put a smile on my face.

lonefrontranger: dunno what .mp3 players youall use
I use the Creative Zen player. I hate Apple and just couldn't bring myself to buy an iPod.

lonefrontranger: if you didn't have the luxury of accessing the track info on a display, do you know your musical collection well enough that you could name all the tracks on it 'by ear'
I currently have about 3,500 songs on my MP3 (just over half way to filling it) and I'm pretty confident that I could name the song, artist, and album of about 2,000 of them. Just as I do with my mix discs, I try to throw on things I'm not as familiar with along with faves and old standbys. Many of today's "what song is this?" cuts are tomorrow's favorites.

Step on Chameleon - Drive Like Jehu
OK, this is giving me a headache already. I remember really liking it back in the day, but now it sounds like a less dynamic Jesus Lizard.

REM - You are the everything. I had always assumed this was a love song and it always reminds me of my high school boyfriend. One day I really listened to the lyrics, though, and now think that it's actually about the parent/child relationship. Funny how perspectives change.

I even tried to name my son Declan but alas, was voted down. Heh. Me, too. It was basically a two word conversation: "Declan?" "NO."

Hmmmm.........

The Church - "The Unguarded Moment"
Easily my favorite Church song, and one of my faves from the whole decade. I would LOVE to hear an acoustic version of this. Hint hint.

Amy Winehouse - "Just Friends"
What's the deal with Amy Winehouse? I keep seeing her name everywhere. Is it worth getting excited about?

1. Buck Owens - "Crying Time" - Such a great sing-along song when you're stuck in traffic.

2. Mana' - "Vivir Sin Aire" - Mexico's answer to U2, unplugged.

3. Sepultura - "Biotech is Godzilla" - Lord, what a switch. I love this song. 'gdt gdt....Godzilla..gdt gdt...raaaaaaaaaaaaaawr!' Not many know that Jello Biafra wrote this.

4. Tom Waits - "Closing Time" - Not a great song out of context, but pleasant enough for what it is.

5. Beastie Boys - "Pass the Mic" - Goodness Gracious!

6. Townes Van Zandt - "No Deal" - One of my favorite quotes is when Townes was asked why he only wrote sad songs and he replied "Well, many of the songs, they aren't sad, they're hopeless." So very true.

7. Mojo Nixon - "Jesus at McDonald's" - I love Mojo, and this is a fine song, especially live, but it can drag a bit.

8. Minutemen - "This Ain't No Picnic" - Such a great bassline.

9. Talking Heads - "Burning Down the House" - the live version from 'Stop Making Sense'.

10. Peter and the Test Tube Babies - "Rock n' Roll is Shit".

I love these threads.

Slack-a-go-go: I'll send you that Church song when I get home! I think you'll really enjoy it -- it's a stunning arrangement, very soft and aching.

As for Amy Winehouse, a friend of mine (who's like crazy in lurrrve with her) just burned me the disc he other day. I like it -- she's got a very rich voice -- but I'm not quite getting the hysteria over it. I'll upload a few songs of hers for you too, if you like.

1. Dire Straits - Skateaway
Great fun, especially when carving through city traffic on a bike.
2. Siegfried Karg-Elert - Marche Triomphale
A triumphal march for the organ. Does exactly what it says on the tin.
3. Pet Shop Boys - Some Speculation
From the "Further Listening" bonus CD that Pet Shop Boys released a few years ago. Expansive, dystopian sound - to my untutored ears, at least. You can never have enough Pet Shop Boys in your life.
4. Jesus Christ Superstar - Superstar
Haven't heard this since primary school. Good fun, if you like that sort of thing.
5. Milburn - Cheshire Cat Smile
These guys were at my college's May Ball last year. Good stage presence/banter.
6. Chopin - 2nd movement of 2nd Piano Concerto
Fantastic!
7. Desert Island Discs interview of Hugh Laurie
Not sure why I have this. Laurie is likeable and witty. Sue Lawley enjoyably nosy as usual.
8. Verdi - Requiem
Verdi is great; can't resist turning up the volume so flatmates forced to enjoy/endure the fantastic double-chorus Dies Irae bit.
9. Kleptones - See
Queen mashup - 'the question isn't what are we going to do, the question is what aren't we going to do'.
10. The Juliana Theory - Do You Believe Me?
Loud, simple, alt rock.

3. Bachelor Girl - Gotta let You Go
4. Van Morrison - Vanlose Stairway
5. James Reyne - Errol
6. Alice Cooper - I Never Cry
7. Violent Femmes - Never Tell
8. David Bowie - Sufragette City
9. The Cure - High
10 Badly Drawn Boy - Logic of a Friend

and matthewr, you're right. there can never be enough pet shop boys. i need more. especially after seeing this thread which made me realise how very much cool old music i'd forgotten about.

beautifully ambient spacey study techno
3. Louis Armstrong - Someday You'll Be Sorry
um, you guys know louis armstrong, right? right?
4. December - Collective Soul
more 90's complaint rock
5. Gang of Four - Paralysed
what interpol wishes they could be but i like interpol too, so what does that make me?
6. Karin Allyson - How Insensitive / Chopin Prelude Op. 28 No. 4
50gb of music and it comes up with 2 frisbeegirl trax from the same artist, from her ginormous upload some months back. which is a testament to how good these tracks are. more lucious loungey goodness
7. TV On The Radio - Tonight
shouldn't have to explain why i like them to this crowd.
8. Boards of Canada - Under the Coke Sign
more dizzy ambient study techno
9. Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American
yeah i like crappy pop music. what can you do?
10. Beck - Readymade
i really cant express why i like beck as much as i do but its the same reason i like mike doughty.
