*applauds taz for oh-so-meta pic* *applauds essexjan again because I don't think I'd ever be able to manage that*
posted by TheDonF 27 February | 04:12
TheDonF : if you're not an alcoholic, then you don't have to worry about 'managing' it. For those of us who reach that point, it's literally a life or death decision.

You have nothing to worry about. Anyone who chooses to drink cherry beer in a real ale pub cannot possibly be an alcoholic.
posted by essexjan 27 February | 04:30
Oh, and the cat totally rocks, taz. Thanks so much.
posted by essexjan 27 February | 04:33
/Hopes he didn't say something wrong. Backs away slowly.
posted by TheDonF 27 February | 05:06
No, nothing wrong at all, TheDonF. There is a world of difference between someone who likes a drink and can occasionally get off-their-face drunk (like you) and someone (like me) who cannot drink safely because once I start I can't stop.

The operative word being "can't". Meaning I have no choice once I have that first drink. If I was to take any alcohol into my system it would trigger the compulsion to drink. I am physically unable to stop once I start drinking. So I just don't start.
posted by essexjan 27 February | 05:22
Major congrats EssexJan, I think better education has many of us who drink to excess on occasions asking ourselves the question the TheDonF asks, which can only be a good thing really. It is better to be vigilant because the human cost of alcoholism is so vast.
Yah-Hay!

"If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through. We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness. We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it. We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace. No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others. That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear.

We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows. Self-seeking will slip away. Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change. Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us. We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us. We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves. Are these extravagant promises? We think not. They are being fulfilled among us -- sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. They will always materialize if we work for them."

Congratulations Jan.

Thanks for all the congrats. I went to my AA Home Group tonight, armed with a box of Krispy Kreme donuts (the only place you can buy 'em here is at Canary Wharf).

I could not have gone 8 years without a drink had it not been for AA and the programme of recovery. It saved my life.

And danf has it exactly right. It's for today. Just for today.

The trick is to string a few todays together without drinking.

This is where the programme comes in. You see, it's taught me how to live my life in such a way that the 'fuck it' switch doesn't go, and a drink would seem like the solution to everything, both good and bad.

And now : one of the joys of sobriety - football. Manchester United have just kicked off, so I'm off to watch the game.
