Career Counseling Question [More:]I would love to hear from anyone who's met with a career counselor and what they got out of it. I'm just starting my job search back up again and have been thinking about meeting with one but don't want to waste my money, ya know?
Like any relationship with a counselor, it depends on both the counselor and the counseled. If you have specific services you'd like (resume critique, occupational testing, salary advice, interview preparation, etc.) you're likely to have good luck finding a person who can help you with specifics. If you are looking for help in a more general sense, i.e. making a major shift in career direction, sorting out educational/work goals, contemplating a relocation, you may need to shop for a counselor with a broader practice area, or maybe even an executive search firm. It can be trick avoiding the meat brokers in the game, however. And, to some extent, success with a career counselor depends on the field in which you're looking.

Have you read any of the self-help books, like the latest edition of What Color is Your Parachute? Have you been to your state employment service office? (Many services available from paid counselors are free at state offices.)

I need to get that book, thanks for reminding me, paul.

Of course, I KNOW what I want to do, it just doesn't pay any money!

Good luck in your job search, fenriq.

BREAKING NEWS ANNOUNCEMENT; my better half just called and has gotten 2 offers! May his luck rub off on you, fen!

My experience with career counselors suggests that they better serve my needs over a long-term relationship. Then, I take that knowledge to an image consultant for short-term needs. For me, presentation is more difficult than developing content.
