i love this song [More:]

i remember hearing this song on kroq-fm in los angeles. they never backannounced it, and i never heard it again until a couple of summers ago when we were on our way down to atlanta for a weekend shopping excursion. a local radio station (i forget the call letters) was in the middle of a countdown of the top 500 alternative singles of the nineties, and right as we pulled into the valet parking area of our hotel THEY STARTED PLAYING THAT SONG!!! there was a line of cars behind me, so i couldn't just sit there and wait until the song was over... as soon as we checked in to our room, i grabbed the yellow pages, found the request line of the radio station, and whoever it was that answered the phone was very helpful and told me that it was, in fact, a band from boston called the dambuilders, and that the song was called "shrine".

anyone else have any moments like this, where you hear a song that pushes all of the right buttons and you never did find out who did it until like ten years later?
In ’96, when I was living in Rome, I kept hearing this song on the radio: a laid-back & loungey, faintly jazzy number, sung in Italian, except for the chorus, in which there were a few lines of English ‘It’s wonderful… good luck my baby; It’s wonderful… I dream of you…’ but even though I must’ve heard it dozens of times, gradually falling in love with it, I never could pick out the name of the singer or the song.

About five years later, waching TV in an hotel-room in Amsterdam, there came on a (Dutch) ad, which used part of the same song…

Not long after that, back in the UK, a lengthy web-searching session on the imperfectly-remembered lyrics brought me to the artist (Paolo Conte) and the song: Via Con Me (‘Come With Me’).

I once heard a song, "The Mask," by Roger Glover, that totally captured me in that way, but I never knew the title or artist until Al Gore invented teh intarwebs. Another one was "Back O' The Moon," the first 10,000 Maniacs song I ever heard, but until I found a copy of "The Wishing Chair," all I knew was that there was this woman, Natalie somethingorother, that had this amazing, captivating sort of voice.

In a much more negative way, Laurie Anderson's "O Superman" gave me nightmares. In fact, I thought I was having a nightmare and woke to realize I'd fallen asleep with the radio on. It was a good long while before I heard the song again and was able to track down the title, artist and lyrics, and talk myself down out of the metaphorical tree it'd chased me up into.

Finally, I happened to have a fragment of childhood memory bubble up..."Happy Heart" was one of Andy Williams' biggest hits and one of the first bits of pop music I noticed as a kid, but I'd forgotten it for decades until I woke up one morning with some of the chorus echoing in my mind.

thank you for the download link, but you know, one of the main reasons i really, really don't like 'senduit' is that it says nothing about the file, no filename, no nothing; it just starts shoving some mystery file download at you. i'm curious about what this song is, but im at work and clicking links that begin inadvertently downloading stuff is prolly on the shortlist of Things I Shouldn't Do.

at least on yousendit, there's a filename to glance at and a choice to say 'yes' or 'no' before downloading.

otherwise, thanks, and yes i absolutely do have several examples of this; probably the most notable tho was 'little fluffy clouds' by The Orb... yes the VW New Beetle theme. anyways that song floated around my consciousness for six or eight years before i finally discovered it on an indie/techno .mp3 site.

lfr, I've started using divshare, because you can listen to the song first before you decide to download it. Or keep going back to listen to it. Unlike yousendit, it doesn't expire after a week or so.

lonefrontranger: i'm not a fan of senduit either, but they've proven to be more reliable than yousendit on several occasions, especially with large files. i assure you that the download link does not contain any virii, spyware, malware, $200 chocolate chip cookie recipes or pictures of britney spears' head. :)

essexjan - thanks for the tip!

When Tuesday Night Music Club by Sheryl Crow came out, it was a rather obscure title and it took awhile to catch on, at least it seemed so to me (anyone can correct me on this if I am wrong).

I was driving up I-5 to Portland and heard "All I Wanna Do" on the radio and it just blew me away, but it was in the middle of a set and I had no idea who it was. It took me a couple weeks then I heard it on a local jazz station and I called and they told me what the CD was, and the track, and I had to ORDER it. I loved the first CD of hers, then she hit, and I lost interest. It's still the only Sheryl Crow music I have. Now she's whoring for hair color on the Super Bowl. Oh well.

thanks jan, i really appreciate this resource link, good stuff.

its cool syntax, i totally don't mean to imply you'd send sketchy files and didn't mean to sound snarky, i'm really not. i mean why would i complain about a link to a cool mp3? this has just been on my mind for awhile as re: why senduit sorta gives me the heebie-jeebies.

to clarify: i surely didn't intend for anyone to get the
AAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!! FERFLYINGFUCKSAKEYOUUNHOLYBASTARDS!!!!
NOTANOTHERGODSBEDAMNEDSENDUITLINKAARRRRGHHH!!STABSTABSTABDIEDIEDIE!!!1 kind of feeling from my whinging upthread there, it's more of a *sigh* guess-i-can't-click-there *mope* thang, if you get my drift.

I think the think about senduit (which I also like) is that the poster should indicate what the download is in the link.
