Dammit. I just noticed a typo in something I sent off as a writing sample. ARGH.
I'm hoping that since it was a "piece in progress" rather than a finished product, as well as dated three years ago, it might be ok. It also somehow managed not to set off Word's grammar check, so at least there's no green squiggle pointing to my incompetency.
When I sent off my application to transfer to NYU, I put my essay in the envelope last, and took it to the campus post office. As I walked back to my dorm, I read my other copy of the sample and noticed it contained a HUGE typo (extra words in a sentence). I ran back to the post office, made them give me the envelope back, and replaced it. Whew.
Oh, I know your pain. When presenting papers in person, I've learned to turn it blank side up as I hand it over, lest I spot a typo just my professor takes it irrevocably in hand.
I've also learned to proofread upside-down. Somehow the errors pop out that much faster.
(Now just watch --- I'll have left a typo in this very comment. Doy.)
