This AskMe turntable question got me thinking. What records did you steal from your parent's record collection?[More:]I used to spend summer days sifting through my parent's, generally lousy, record collection to find the few gems in there. Here's what I ended up stealing:

Arlo Guthrie - Hobo's Lullaby

Cat Stevens - Tea for the Tillerman

Jackson 5 - ABC

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66

My mom tells me I used to bounce up and down to Hobo's Lullaby when I was just a baby in a playpen. Today, I still have that same album and listen to it in all of its scratchy goodness.

You kids today with your DRMs and your OGGs and FLACs. (Shakes cane dismissively).
All of them. I mean, all that my parents had. But I can't remember which ones used to be theirs now.

Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, Whipped Cream and Other Delights.
My parents were older; what can I say? I owe my record collection to my (much) older brother: Dylan - Blonde on Blonde & Self Portrait, which got my adolescence off to a good start. The Incredible String Band, which I still love. Firesign Theatre, which puzzled the hell out of me but I could tell was cool. And I also got all the Beach Boys from him but my first husband made me sell them in the 80s as being too uncool to have in his collection. Grrrrrrrrrrr.

Off the top of my head, I know I've got Sgt Pepper, a couple of Cat Stevens albums and the Jeff Wayne War of the Worlds concept album, which I remember scaring the crap out of me as a kid. I think there's a couple of others, but can't remember what they are.

A 78rpm copy of Hoagy Charmichel's Hong Kong Blues

Here's the story of a very unfortunate colored man
Who got 'rested down in ol' Hong Kong
He got twenty year's privelige taken away from him
When he kicked ol' Buddha's gong.

So now he's poundin' a piano just to pay the price
For a ticket to the land of the free
Well he says that he's from Frisco where they send the rice
But he's really from Tennessee

I am not sure how I remember those lyrics. .I broke the record shortly after I moved out of my parents' house.
(I think it was also played in To Have or Have Not.)

All her Bowie, Madonna, Cindy Lauper, maybe a few other things.

I was planning on stealing my mom's shockingly impressive Prince collection... until she told me she'd been buying them for me all these years since I would dance around whenever he came on the radio as a kid.

Also, Smart Dalek, your parents are way cool.

My parents only ever listen to "classical" and opera. So, I have an appreciation of the music but I never took any of their stuff.

I once took my Dad's autographed Rory Gallagher LP (Calling Card)to school to show off and somehow lost it. I figured it was stolen. :-(

We didn't have a record collection. Well, we did once, some ancient 78s (and even a 16rpm record), all light operetta or popular classics, that he'd been given by a pub friend. But he smashed them all one night in a temper. But we didn't have a record player anyway.

On preview: OMG! Did you get into trouble, wilder?

Oh gods, that thread makes me feel old. Get the fuck offa my lawn!

You're not the only one, deborah. I always thought my folks were cool because they had Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Stones, the Beatles, The Who, Pink Floyd, etc., etc.

But Prince? Sisters of Mercy? Are your parents my age? Am I technically old enough to have kids who can post on Mecha?

Let's see... my dad's copies of The Wall and Hotel California, a few Harry Chapin albums, Chicago Transit Authority, Weather Report, Simon & Garfunkel. And if I remember correctly, he's got some ELO I should dig up. The only good thing my mom had was James Taylor.

She always jokes that she married him for his HiFi system.

I didn't take any of them, but I remember Whipped Cream and Other Delights, a Pat Boone album with a Little Richard cover ≡ Click to see image ≡ (similar cover), and Tom Jones Live in Las Vegas ≡ Click to see image ≡ (awesome cover!). That was as good as it got; the rest of their collection was super-lame.

One of my dad's friends gave me what I believe was an original pressing of Sgt. Pepper (rainbow label, cardboard inserts) that I'm pretty sure I sold at the used record store for $1.00.

The younger set might be more familiar with Soul Asylum's Clam Dip and Other Delights ≡ Click to see image ≡.

Go Tom Jones! I don't have any of my parents' records. I don't know if my dad had any and my mom's probably got lost when one of our storage units flooded and then went up for auction. I do have a few Bowie albums though, for framing and displaying.

I didn't take their records, but I inherited some of the music anyway, because these staples always end up in rotation, and they're what we listened to growing up:

- Neil Diamond - anything pre-1980.
- Rolling Stones
- Harry Chapin
- Harry Nilsson
- Paul Simon
- Tom Jones
- Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass
- Barry White
- Henry Mancini

Now, my tastes are a lot more modern than this list, but I can still be thrown right back into our old living room with the ratty brown couch anytime I hear them.

My mom listened to crap when I was little. (In the late 70s/early 80s - I will give mom some credit on the Abba tip.) The first album I asked for and received was the Grease soundtrack. In second grade I started buying 45s. I vividly remember buying Hit Me With Your Best Shot by Pat Benatar in the Sears record dept. I also remember taking that 45 to a school party and being disturbed that all the other kids had brought crap children's music.

The coolest record my mom had when I was little was a Barbra Streisand Greatest Hits album that had the song "Enough is Enough" on it (I still love Donna Summer). I did also enjoy the Live Barry Manilow album she had.

My mom's birthday is today and here are the cd's I purchased for her:
Josh Groban - Awake
Celtic Woman - A New Journey
Norah Jones - Not Too Late
Carly Simon - Into White

And she only wanted the Carly Simon because it's classic songs. She went through a phase when I was in high school where she started enjoying Queen which was a nice change of pace.

Two Bob Newhart records and 3 of the first 4 Kingston Trio albums were faves from my parent's record collection that went with me when I moved out. I remember they had a well worn copy of "Banjo at the Gaslight Club" and several beat-to-shit Rusty Warren albums, which makes me realize that my folks must've been bigger partiers before I came along.
