Toad lilies! My new obsession. Coolest flowers ever? [More:]

They look like orchids, but apparently they're very tough and easy to grow, if you have a moist, shady spot. I just happened to be looking for something interesting to put by my front door, and stumbled upon a world of toad lilies. Now I can't think of anything else.

Apparently they got their name from the famous Tasaday tribe hoax. Story is here, starting about halfway down the page.
Those are really pretty!

Oh, and they bloom September to November, when not much else is blooming. Weird!

They're lovely!

Interesting article you've linked to... It seems fairly obvious the Tasaday were a (poorly organized) hoax, but some folks out there still believe.

They look like spiders. They're kind of scary. But the colors...mmmm.

Those are gorgeous flowers... I'd never heard of them nor the hoax before, but that's really a cool story you'll have to tell people when they ask about the flowers by your front door! :)

I have some but mine never have impressed me much. I have moved them twice, not sure if I haven't found just the right sun/shade combination for them yet or if there is something about the soil or climate they are not fond of.

What was unimpressive about them, weretable? Not flowering much? Or the flowers themselves aren't impressive?

agro, these are gorgeous. Very showy. Thanks for the link, I will be on the lookout.

I love all lilies, especially the African Lily and the Spider Lily. I have wanted to do a rose, spider lily, wax begonia combination around the mailbox for the longest time. It would be so easy. Maybe this year.

The foliage was looking pretty ugly by the end of summer where they were at first although they flowered moderately well. I moved them into deeper shade and the foliage fared better (although it still got kinda ugly) but they barely flowered at all. Like I said, it might just be that they don't like it here.
