Celebrities + 1940's Fashion = !!! →[More:] Some of you might have seen this, but it's new to me. As far as I can tell it's some sort of fashion shoot with celebrities in the style of shots from a movie.

Can you imagine if this was a film? I would die. Just up and die. Then I would rise from the dead, sell everything I own, and buy as many tickets to this movie as I could, wearing adult diapers, never leaving my seat.

GAWD that would be such an awesome movie.

Amazing that Annie Liebovitz just gets more and more creative as the years pass. Also ... a few of those photos were dark enough that the woman in them could have been any starlet. It was kind of interesting to mistake one for another, then go down to the description and realize I'd mixed them up.

yes i can. it's called film noir.

so, this is just a photo shoot with celebrities ripping off pulp/film noir story lines and scenes? the pictures are very nice but i don't see the reason to get all that excited about it.

Djimon Hounsou is gorgeous, but it's his voice that makes him to die for.

For the most part I agree with you, stynxo, but I'm enjoying seeing so many famous people posed and lit in a style that for me symbolizes capital-H-Hollywood. For me the clothes have less to do with it.

For some reason I especially like this Helen Mirren one. This Dunst/Downey one is arresting, too, but it's the facial expressions more than the clothes.

Well that's a genre, and one of my favorite genres at that. By "film" I meant... well. A film. Like a movie. That actually existed. Instead of just the pictures.

Her lighting is always so fantastic. She makes everyone and (more importantly) every article of clothing look so desirable.

I'd love to see Diane Lane and Edward Norton in a movie together.

I agree with stynxno. Nothing today's celebrities or studios can do will equal either film noir or the Golden Age of cinema output. They can pose and wear the clothes, but it's a pale imitation.

so... I'm guessing we shouldn't try to appreciate 'modern' interpretations of classical music or art either?

not to be a devil's advocate, I mean I see where you're (kinda) coming from but can't quite say that I agree with that stance.

Oh weird - I saw this last night in Vanity Fair and it looked stunning in print. I'm not sure why there was a copy of Vanity Fair at my parents' place as it's not something they'd read, but there you go.

I'm not saying you shouldn't try, lfr, just that I don't find it interesting. As to modern interpretations of noir, LA Confidential is a pretty good example -- it was an excellent movie in its time, but when it recedes into history and falls into a necessary direct comparison with the classics on which it's based, it looks quite a bit paler than it did when it was current. It remains a rehash. Also, if anyone is drawn to the images and ideas in these photos, it's likely that they'll be more awed by the real thing. That's all.
