Grrrrrrrrrr What is wrong with the post office?[More:]How come they never fucking TRY to deliver anything, they just leave those stupid orange slips? Now I have to wait until Tuesday (because Monday is a holiday) to see if they'll leave the package. JUST LEAVE THE PACKAGE. UPS will leave a package containing prescription medication at my door; I don't see why the USPS won't leave a package containing a dog bed. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Monday is a holiday? How many damn Holiday Mondays do you get in America anyway?

We get Easter Monday, the first and last Mondays in May and the last Monday in August.

It seems as if Americans have at least two Holiday Mondays a month.

Monday is "President's Day".

You don't get the friday before easter or xmas day, jan? What about bank holidays? (or are they the mondays you're talking about?)

Well, they call it "President's Day," but it's really "Monday after Scody's B-day."

It seems as if Americans have at least two Holiday Mondays a month.

Once Scody B-day Monday is over, we'll be fresh out of them till Memorial Day (last Monday in May).

I don't get any of these holidays. The post office is just closed. I think Americans in the corporate world traditionally get 8 holidays? and only two of them are guaranteed to be on a monday (Veterans day and Memorial Day). Do other people working non-academic jobs really get days like Cesar Chavez day or Presidents Day off?

Well, working in the finance realm, we get market holidays. And the markets are closed Monday. Although I'm going to work and bank the holiday for later.

Labor Day is also always on a Monday -- the first Monday of September.

The number of guaranteed days off can depend on your state and the sector where you work. When I lived in Chicago, for example, my (ex-)husband, a public defender, got several days off (Columbus Day, Veterans Day, the delightfully named Casimir Pulaski Day, etc.) that I didn't get working for corporations.

Now, in L.A., I work for a museum that receives public funds, so even though I am not actually an employee of the city or county of Los Angeles, I am guaranteed all of the city/county holidays off anyway -- so now I get Columbus Day, Veterans Day, etc. Interestingly, I get more of these days off than my sister, who is employed as an academic (she doesn't get Labor Day off at her college, for example, which strikes me as insane).

Legal holidays for the U.S.

Where it says "Washington's Birthday", read "Presidents Day". Government offices are guaranteed to be closed those days. Banks are usually closed those days. When I worked for a savings & loan, we got all of those days except Columbus Day. July 4, December 25 and January 1 were "floating" holidays. Meaning, if they fell on a weekend we would get either the Monday or Friday off.

Canadian employees get more holidays, at least government workers do.

While Monday isn't a national statutory holiday in Canada, it's Family Day in Alberta - a day off for Albertans to relax and spend QT with their loved ones (doesn't that make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside to know that the provincial government cares about family ties?)

Anyway, thanks to our office in Alberta, the powers that be have granted the rest of their Canadian employees a freebie day off. So yay for me! I have an extra day to sleep in this weekend. :)
