America - Day One With a bit of time and energy left in a hotel room in Bowling Green, Kentucky, I offer my transcribed journal notes from today. This was written as Adam drove along...[More:]It's a little random, and I hope it's more interesting than annoying or offensive.

With Dorito-stained knuckles, I write this first sentence. We are in Kentucky, aiming at "The Bat" as Adam has named Louisville. It's now quite hilly and snowy. Ohio was MUCH flatter.

The intense case of heebie-jeebies which met me in Detroit has been long gone, but the Planet of the Apes style Giant Jesus which we saw somewhere around Monroe, Ohio was quite the shock.

The oddly named places have been a source of fun for us; Miamisburg, Uniopolis, & Delphos paired with Wapokoneta made us think that the Great Behemoth may be running out of names. Possible new community names like Chairlift, Maine, or Mattress, Arizona, New San Bostonelphia, or Los Francisco, Wyoming were offered to this country of few road signs & Giant Jesuses. The Bob Evans's sign floating high in the air roadside also serve to remind us that fireworks, titty bars, mocassins and beef jerky abound.

America, you are huge, and you confound me.

P.S I wish I had a coffee.
Drop kick me gesturing jesus!
The US love affair with the jesus has a lot to do with garden variety religious delusions and a widespread and profound lack of imagination.

Where else are you going on your trip?

Here's the rest of our itinerary, such as it is interrobang. It's now 430 am, and I am awake for some reason...

This will never happen. Trust me. When we start running out of English or French or Native American names to use, we'll turn to Spanish, Chinese and Indian sources.

Heh. I made a Metafilter post about that giant Jesus. Don't forget to stop at one of the 4,786 Waffle Houses you will see.

Ahhh... fast food signs on fifty-foot poles. Ohio's state flower.

Enjoy the travels...

Richat, my Lord, you are on my dream trip. Seriously, I've been planning the music pilgrimage for ages and hope to follow in your steps one day. You are going to Hatch Show Print, right?

America, you are huge, and you confound me.

You've got that right. Now you know how we feel!

But seriously -- I hope you don't make the classic foreign-traveller's mistake of seeing a few Bob Evanses and giant Jesuses and think America has revealed itself to you (Yeah, I'm looking at you, Bill Bryson). Certainly one thread of it has. But our nation is incomprehensible in its scope and variety and contradiction even to most of its residents. You're going to Hoboken, too...that ought to help round out the picture.

It's a big, diverse, broad-shouldered, embattled, rich, fascinating, volatile, exciting, creative, contentious, brash, and beautiful place, the U.S.

And you are going to the heart of the body of its greatest cultural gift to the world, its music. Yayyyyy. Tennessee is purty, too.

Have a great time, take pics, and report back!

Oh, God, yeah. And when you do, get the Pecan Waffle. And make sure you play the special Waffle House songs on the jukebox. Those are treasures.

Back to say you inspired me to make a Waffle House jukebox post to MeFi.

You really haven't seen America until you've seen her giant Jesuses. :) Enjoy your travels.
