15 February 2007

Look out NYC, essexjan is on her way! I just booked a flight to New York, arriving at JFK on 5 June, going home 12 June.

[More:]Now, tell me about nice (and reasonably priced) hotels, bunnies. There's going to be, I think, four of us, and there is a plan to go to see some horse racing that's happening on 9/10 June I think. I will have from Tuesday to Friday to myself before the others arrive, so I am at your disposal for you to do with me as you wish, NY bunnies!
Hmm. That is almost my birthday. I will have to make arrangements with whatever employer I have at that time to have some days off.

Oooh, hmmm.
Too bad it isn't more fallish as then it could be the take off point for other meet ups in a mad plan for meetupmania--

Oh, we'll most certainly have to come up with something!! Perhaps you could be persuaded to venture to New Jersey on your arrival? Or I'll come up for a day or so! Meetup in NY? I'm so excited!

Bring a brelly and light clothes. I hear that gortex is a uniform for winter there but I swear I was the only one last summer walking around in the rain with my parka on.

Man, NYC gets all the luck!

There's pretty much no such thing in NYC.

But what do you consider "reasonably priced?"

Around $200 a night?

i stayed in one of the many cheap hostel-like but with your own room hotels a while ago. i'm sure a NYC bunny could fix you up better than i, but it would be found easily in a hostel type guide.
If i give it a think maybe i can remember the names and the streets. But they were a ten or two above $100 and you have the lovely transfer rate working for you, too.

I can't wait to meet you, EJ!!!

One of my friends always stays at Park south hotel, which is right by the number 6 train (and only a short walk from union square and a host of subway stops). I see that trip advisor has kind of mixed reviews, but she likes it. The rooms are, of course, small but that's par for the course in NYC. This is assuming you dont' want to go the obnoxious "stay in times square" route.

About three years ago I stayed at the Portland Square Hotel on W 47th St (here) which meets your price criterion - it currently seems to be charging about $1200 for a week, for a single with shared bath. Price comes down if you share (double/double is $2000/week).

It was nice enough... if I'd been better about complaining I might have got my radiator fixed and asked to be moved to a non-smoking room, though. I've become more assertive since then. It was quiet, but then this was January 2004 and it was 0 degrees Fahrenheit outside.

On preview - yeah, I hated Times Square. Walking in the other direction was OK though.

And I'll also be sharing the room with either one other person or maybe two other people (if we can find a place that'll give us either a room with 2 beds or perhaps even a 2-room suite. The Riverside Tower Hotel looks promising. It has suites at very reasonable prices. If there is four of us, well, we are none of us little skinny things, so four in a 2-bed room might be too much.

Oh, that's totally doable.

It depends on what part of town you want to stay in, of course.

June can be difficult sometimes because it's a big tourist time, but when I worked for a London-based company in NYC, we used to put our visiting budget-conscious people up in the Gershwin, which bills itself as being for the "creative, budget-minded international traveller." Just make sure you book one of the "Standard" or "Superior" rooms (or better...). They do have some hostel rooms, but I wouldn't recommend them...

OMG, just read TripAdviser on Riverside Tower. Eeeeek!

The Gershwin looks great. I could book a single for 5,6 and 7 before Diane, etc. arrive and then share a room for the 8-11 June.

I was just coming back to recommend the Gershwin!

And Diane is coming too, yaaaaay! Tell her we're excited to see her, too.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 15 February | 13:56
When I find out who's coming (it'll definitely be me, Diane, her cousin Gail and maybe Marie, George's other sister) and Diane's daughter Leah, then we'll be able to make a firm booking.

I can arrange time off, this is plenty of notice!

All rightttttttt!!!!!! Awesome!

I don't know if this would help you much, but there are some motels and hotels in my neighborhood, which is c. 15-20 minutes from midtown in Queens. I'm imagining the price *might* be better. I don't know.

I'll do some research and e-mail you.
