Anyone else up on Windows VIsta yet? [More:]I am, not that I have to be (I've had to be an early adopter for all other versions of Windows previously for job reasons), but it's force of habit.

I like the Aero interface but the rest, so far? Enh. Okay Media Center is kinda cool, but I can find the same stuff on YouTube a lot quicker and, well, free-er.

What are your thoughts?
apparently not. how is it?

I just switched to XP in 2006. No point in rushing these things.

the only time i looked forward to a windows upgrade was when i moved from 3.11 to 95. although i suppose nt 4 was pretty cool too. i'm not really sure what the point of vista is yet.

A friend of mine put it on his brand new Thinkpad X61 with a gig of RAM. Then he had to bump it up to 2 gigs to make it usable. So I think I'll be avoiding it for several years.

But hey I still run win2K.
Me too, arsey. I also have a Pentium II laptop that I keep on the coffee table for googling things that runs 98.

I have two computers here at work. One runs Windows 95.

(Yes, I'm bragging.... ;P)

I decided a long time ago that 2k would be the last Windows version I'd ever voluntarily use.

I'm looking forward to upgrading my work computer to Vista from 2000.

Yeah, well, my dad likes saying DOS has all the functionality he needs.

Hey arse_hat:

You don't have permission to access /~pgut001/pubs/vista_cost.html on this server.

It's because I'm now running Vista isn't it?

Don's tinfoil hat is nice. At least everyone always talks about Don's tinfoil hat. Should I get one too?

Wow, that is some read. I only understood about 20% of it, but it sure makes a Mac look better to this died-in-the-wool PC dude. In fact they're looking better and better all the time.

I just switched from 95 to XP in October (it's a whole new world). I suppose I should be using Vista near about 2014 when Microsoft will stop supporting XP. I also have a Mac running 10.4 so I'm good for now.

I'm running it, the "Business Edition" on a dual-boot XP laptop. I've been "evaluating" it for use at our clients.

It is not fast on this machine, the "user experience" thingy says it's about a 3. I like the Aero interface, it really improves on the Warner-Brothers Windows XP interface. I REALLY like the search improvements - they make Spotlight look like a dog. It's so good its making me question whether or not I would really need to structure my data folders if I adopt Vista permanently - because it really doesn't matter where the data is, the search finds it. I have not noticed a drag on resources as data is indexed, either - that's a real difference from XP.

The DRM and content management schemes bother me on a home PC, but not on corporate PC's where (I predict) rights management will become a big deal. And the need for "activation servers" in corporate environments is going to be problematic - Vista clients need access to a locally installed server that keeps track of their activation status. That's one more thing to go wrong, I think. I hope MS gets their shit together about some of the corporate support issues they're creating for us IT types.

For corporate use, we're not recommending clients move to Vista for at least a year unless they have no choice. For residential clients, Vista is fine and has some real improvements for some tasks.

(For balance, I am also a Mac guy, I have one and I love it. I've built two dual-boot Mac/Windows machines, and I love that combination as quite possibly the most flexible platform I've seen yet.)

XP blew big wads of ick when it first came out. So did OS X. Vista is young. As it matures/updates, it will improve. I think DRM is doomed as a strategy - Jobs is the first player to admit it - and MS will follow suit, somewhere down the line.

In the meantime, I have Star Raiders loaded on my Atari 800 and I'm going to blow those 8-bit spaceships right out of the sky.
