Since it's a day for looooooove, let's talk about embarrassing celebrity crushes. I'm sure we've all had a few. 'Fess up![More:]One of the first celebrities I ever had a crush on was Peter Wolf of the J. Geils band. This was when "Centerfold" was popular so I was around 8 years old. Never mind that he's older than my parents!

An embarrassing crush closer to my age - Cade McNown, when he was QB of the Bears. Yes, I know he sucked and he's kind of a jerk to boot. *hides face in shame*
Jody Foster. Still trying to get her attention somehow.

Havana, he was good enough for Faye Dunaway...

I have always had a very strange attraction to Carol Kane (the woman who played Latka's wife on Taxi) and for the lady who played Dapne on Frasier. I seem to have a thing for quirky voices and funny broads.

(danf, I hear she's impressed by good marksmanship and appreciates Scorsese flicks)

I just watched Inside Man, a surprisingly good movie. It also gave me a brand new celebrity crush: Kim Director.

I have this painting of a scene in King Lear, and I always used to have a crush on the Cordelia in it.

Also, Queen Elizabeth I.

That's either pathetic or pretentious. I'm not sure which.

Maybe both.

They have to be embarrassing, eh? Hmm.

Well, for a little while as a kid, I thought Tootie was pretty cute.

first crush was Robert E. Lee and second one was Jeremy Brett, apparently I like men in vests and suits? I'm not embarassed tho!
posted by Mrs.Pants 14 February | 12:41
Jody Foster too.
Also, Kelly Rowland & someone else. Can't remember who though which must say something about how insubstantial these things are.
posted by seanyboy 14 February | 12:42
I used to have a huge crush on Christina Ricci, but man, what happened to her?

Now everyone thinks I have one on Shakira, also Elliot from Scrubs (not the actress, but the character, except for the whole republican thing).

Hey! These aren't embarrassing!

(well, not all of them)

My embarrassing crush? When I was 11 or 12? The singer dude from A-ha. heh.
posted by gaspode 14 February | 12:55
Earliest I think was Paula Janis who was part of The Magic Garden.

Then Elisabeth Sladen (so pleased when she made an appearance in the current Doctor Who).

Winona Ryder - my wife and I have an agreement that if Winona asks me out, I'll ask her permission first.

Catherine Bell

This is an oldie-but I had a tremendous crush on Gunther Gebel-Williams. Yep, the animal trainer.

Oh, and Citrusfreak12, Hugh Laurie IS a gorgeous man.

(My most embarrassing teen crush?

Robert Blake.

(Yes, I WAS a weird little teenager, why do you ask?)
posted by bunnyfire 14 February | 13:01
Can not think of any. Sorry. I don't think I've ever had what qualified as a "crush" on a celebrity.

Didn't everybody? He was willing to smash himself against the borders of a cartoon panel just to be with the woman he loved!!

Plus, he was in black and white. That makes people sexy. Which might explain why I had a mad crush on Wally from Leave It to Beaver in jr. high.
posted by jrossi4r 14 February | 13:10
Man, I'm a warped little nerdpuppy.

Kirstie Allie.
Jennifer Connelly - before eyebrow waxing and excessive skinniness - Labyrinth!
Lydia, from Beetlejuice. (Not Winona. Lydia.)
Lydia, from Beetlejuice the cartoon. (Not Winona. Lydia. From the cartoon.)
Winona Ryder.
Lydia Lunch.
Beverly Crusher/Gates Mcfadden
Jodie Foster
Markie Post CA. "Night Court" Oh God don't ask.

There's more, but I'm afraid I've frightened you all quite enough.

Emily Gilmore, from the Gilmore Girls. The most embarassing part is the admission that I watch the Gilmore Girls.
posted by Greg Nog 14 February | 13:23
haha, bunnyfire!

I think many of you are cheating... most of these aren't embarrassing. Why's everyone embarrassed about Jody Foster? (Glad you all have a crush on her, though - I have a girlcrush on her myself. :))

I kinda had a crush on the Tom Baker Dr. Who, and on Ilya Kuryakin in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. More recently, Legolas Greenleaf! Hot elfy love! I think I have a permacrush on Johnny Depp because of all the quirky characters he's played... That's gotta be embarrassing, right?

OK my first "handplay" fanatasies involved Diana Rigg as Emma Peele. Although at that point I did not know how everything "worked," nor did I know that fine points of the female anatomy, so it was rather limited in my mind.

Happy now taz?

Sarah Silverman. Julianne Moore. Hubba hubba.
posted by Hellbient 14 February | 13:44
I've always had a crush on Tom Baker as Dr. Who! And I'm still not embarrassed by it. That would be like being embarrassed by my mega crushes on Nicolas Cage and Johnny Depp and, gulp, James McMurtry (totalgreatloveofmylifehejustdoesn'tknowityet) and I'm so not.

I am, however, embarrassed by my crush on Chekov from Star Trek and Mickey Dolenz from the Monkees. And, yes, there were the couple years in there where I was completely in love with Thomas Dolby. And Zonker from Doonesbury and Sirius Black from the Harry Potter books.
posted by mygothlaundry 14 February | 13:48
I am not embarrassed by any of my crushes, which have always been many and varied. A short list, off the top of my head and in no particular order:

Alyssa Milano
Kathleen Turner
Oprah Winfrey
Elizabeth Pena
Marlee Matlin
Isabella Soprano
Geena Davis
Ki Toy Johnson
Erin Gray
Tiffany Amber Thiessen

Yeah, I'm not ashamed of being in love with Colin Firth. It's not embarrassing. Actually Firth is my only celebrity crush. I thought Pierce Brosnan and Don Johnson were hunky when I watched them as kid, but I never had a "crush". Jim from The Office is appealing, but does not come close to Firth.

I swear to God this acquaintance of mine once had a one night stand with Firth

OMG matteo!
Good to know he's into one night stands. If ever I am in his presence I will be sure to throw myself onto him and hope for the best.

My first crush. Michael Jackson.

It was the 80s. He was still black, had a nose and jerri curl.

Then, Ricky Schroeder. Simon LeBon. Joey McIntyre (even more embarrassing because I was too old to like NKOTB), Christina Laettner...

Luckily, I grew up and got smart.

These days my top four are:

Colin Firth
Hugh Laurie
Ian McShane
Johnny Depp

My current celebrity crushes are well known and well documented... and not at all embarrassing!

As a kid, though, I had some doozies... the first crush I can remember (age 4) was on Danny Bonaduce. Oh, the shame, the shame!

John Corbett is delicious.

How could I forget, I also have a thing for Craig Ferguson.

The first one's I recall were the characters...I think I was too young to really separate the characters from the actresses:
1) Col. Wilma Deering - Erin Gray
2) Bailey Quarters - Jan Smithers

Since being a kid, I still have soft spots for Jennifer Connolly, Rosanna Arquette, Elle MacPherson, and prolly a couple others. I still love Bailey Quarters though.

I think I have man-crushes on Johnny Depp, Paul Weller, David Bowie (although who knows what kind of crush that is) and in some strange way, Bob Dylan.

I don't know how some of you can say you have crushes on someone who's name you can't spell - It's Jodie Foster dammit. I really tried to let it go, but I failed.

But we all have a crush on you, rickhat! :)

June Allyson. That's only a seemingly embarrassing admission, because of her later promotion of Depends undergarments and incontinence products, but I hope we can all be adult about this. I also had a big kid crush on Judy Garland, not the teenaged Judy of film, but the aging star Judy trying to re-invent herself for TV, which in my house, at that time, was still black-and-white. Even to a 12 and 13 year old boy, there was something so vunerable and winsome about that woman, putting herself "out there" in front of a whole country trying to succeed in a new medium, and obviously trying so bravely in her attempt. I loved her madly, as she went down in flames, and every week, I wanted to make everybody we knew watch her show, so she'd be happy and rich again.

First celebrity crush: John Cusack in "The Journey of Natty Gann". (He was a hot young hobo with a heart of gold.) The crush deepened when I saw him as Lloyd Dobbler. I still like him.

Other crushes included:

Cory Hart
Phil Collins (WTF)
Sean Connery
Harrison Ford
Bjork
Thom Yorke (!)
Jeff Tweedy
Jennifer Tilly
Taye Diggs

and, current and throbbing:

Hugh Jackman
Audrey Tautou

Michael Landon (from Little House on the Prairie), Shaun Cassidy, Tom Petty, Patrick Swayze, Mike Reno from Loverboy, Dan Marino (ex-Miami Dolphins quarterback), Larry Mullen Jr. from U2.

Has anyone else written fan fiction starring you and your beloved(s)? Mike Reno once gave me a pair of Gloria Vanderbilt designer jeans. Dan Marino arranged for me to manage the Dolphins for a season. Later, when I owned the team, I would invite him for dinner twice a week.

When I was a teenager, I had a crush on Wil Wheaton, Kirk Cameron, and the lead singer from Men Without Hats. I still have a crush on Johnny Depp & Dave Navarro.
posted by treepour 14 February | 16:58
In that Michael Lewis book, Blind Side, he says that an average person, if they were to somehow become the manager of the Yankees or somebody, would probably win at least a few dozen games, and maybe significantly more. But that same person, if they were to somehow become the head coach of an NFL team, might well manage to lose every game for an entire season. That tidbit has stuck in my mind for months, and this may be the first chance I've had to break it out.

Oh, and I've got a bit of a thing for Karyn Crisis. Is that embarrassing?
posted by box 14 February | 17:12
I don't know about embarassing:

Corinne Bohrer
Madeline Kahn
Barbara Bel Geddes in Vertigo.
Sophie Marceau (probably the only one of these that was purely physical)

That's all that I can think of for now.
posted by Eideteker 14 February | 17:41
Oh, yeah, early crush on Kirstie Alley (well over that one), and Jennifer Connelly.
posted by Eideteker 14 February | 17:46
Back in my teenybopper days I was in love with Jordan Knight of NKOTB, he of the dulcet falsetto tones. *sigh* My superficial taste in men has always run towards pretty boy types: Antonio Sabato Jr. is the archetype (if you recall JJ's Love will never do without you video and those CK ads, you know of what I speak)

OMG, bunnyfire, I did too! I actually saw him a couple of times with Ringling Bros/Barnum & Bailey Circus in, like, the late 70's or so!! I had circus programs and everything!

I had a crush on Leif Garrett as a young teen. Currently, I crush on Vin Diesel - yum!
posted by redvixen 14 February | 19:56
My first big crush was on Jason Bateman when he was on "It's Your Move." Then, throughout my teen years my heart belonged to John Cusack. Now, it's Zach Braff, who I picture in another life I would have met and snagged before he got famous. We are the same age, both grew up in Jersey, both Jewish, both (IIRC) attended theatre camp... Who knows, I probably did meet him and thought he was a dork (before I had gained an appreciation for dorkiness).

Embarrassing:
Russell Hitchcock (lead singer of Air Supply)
Leif Garrett
Andy Gibb
Shaun Cassidy
Mike Brady (dad from Brady Bunch)
Tom Selleck
Rick Springfield
Jodie Foster (embarrassing at the time because girls weren't supposed to have crushes on girls, still crushing now but no longer embarrassed)
