12 February 2007

I went all career woman this weekend. After realizing that I was dreading having a third (!) interview with a company only because I had nothing appropriate to wear, I took myself to Ross discount this weekend.[More:] I thought I hated Ross, with the crowds and jammed racks and the lines, but it turns out that shopping two hours before they close on a Saturday night is a good strategy. I got so many clothes! For so cheap! Including two $300 suits that were on sale for $50! And a really cute plum wrap dress! And shirts! And pants! I even had enough money left over to buy a pair of ridiculously conservative black leather pumps! I can now actually pass for a person who has not worked at home in her pajamas for the past three years.
WooHoo! Ross is kind of hit or miss, in general. Sounds like you went on a good day. I bet you look mighty purdy.

This tread is . . . .well you know the rest.

In the past, I had truthfully never gotten beyond walking in, getting immediately fed up, and leaving. I don't mind Marshall's, but the Ross here is just so fucking crowded. But I think the monsoon rain we were getting that night helped.

On preview: Heh.

Oooh wrap dress. Pretty.

I really need to go shopping, so I can start to dress like a grownup. I only have two modes of dressing: 14 year old boy or 18 year old slut.

*sigh*

C'mon...everyone loves an 18 year old slut!

I'm lucky I often have days off during the week and can avoid crowds in stores. Just got to shove the bluehairs out of the way though. It is amazing what you can find for cheap in those places. The clothing item I have the most trouble with are jeans. It seems like you just can't get a normal old pair of 501's anymore...

just don't throw your hat up in the air, because I'm not going to catch it.

I went to a thrift store in LA once, and basically had to leave (well, I wanted to leave but couldn't because the people I was with were still shopping) after about 15 minutes. I couldn't handle that many people, and the pushing and the shoving and the UGH. This was on a Saturday afternoon.

I recently went back on a Tuesday at 10a. There were about ten other people in the store, and I got LOADS of clothes (about 25 articles, including one pair of BITCHIN' boots) for $100. It's all about the timing.

Fuzzbean- I feel that way in malls. I can practically see my video-game-style health indicator dropping... dropping... but they never stock those med kits in weird corners like they do in the video game. I have about a 20 minute lifespan in a mall, especially if it's crowded.

We have a Ross here right next door to TJ Maxx, and once I've spent some time in TJ's I never have the patience to then go to Ross, so I've never been there.

One thing I miss about living in the poorest city in America (Cleveland) is all the thrift stores. There were a bunch of really good ones. Here in Princeton, no such luck.

There's a proverb/saying from somewhere that warns against any enterprise that requires new clothes.... :)

That said, the plum wrap sounds divine, and I now want one. heh.. I really hate shopping and prefer mine vicarious; you got some cool bargains.

Heh, I know. But I'm in the midst of looking for both paid work *and* an internship for school, which means lots and lots and lots of interviews (and hopefully, eventually, some actual work!). And I've been working from home for too long, and just have no work wardrobe any more. So it was time to bite the bullet.

I don't think I've ever read the entire thing. Thanks, matildaben.

I do have to say, it feels like moulting season -- new apartment, new school/career, new job -- so perhaps I can remain in Thoreau's good graces after all.

I'm not good in crowded stores either. I, the mildest mannered chick on the planet, start getting rude and snarky when there are too many people about.

The mister and I made it to the last Value Village sale. There's another one soon (this morning, maybe) and I knew I wasn't going to attempt it. *has flashbacks, shudders*
