What pets do you have and what are their names? [More:]Inspired by the sugar glider love, I'm curious what everyone else here has pet-wise.
yay!! Let's do a pet photo thread!! *is shamelessly always up for a pet photo thread because her guys are so CUTE* That's Django on the left, the hyper springer spaniel, and Theo, the mostly mellow collie mix, on the right.

And George is still going strong, although she lives with my mum now. She is just about to have her 10th birthday. I got her in grad school.

hey arsy, how's Whitey been doing recently?

I have no pets :( but my parents have

Runty long-haired cat - Chewie, cause she looks like Chewbacca
Big B&W short-haired cat - Walter AKA Wally, since he's a rogue just like Sir Walter Raleigh.

Anecdotally, Wally thinks he's a dog. He drinks out of the toilet, likes to take walks with the hu-mans, and will generally bark instead of meow. It's pretty creepy.

Tr33 you named a cat after Buju Banton?
You are my all time world record hero!

I have two cats, Pamplemousse and Henri, but we mostly call them Moose and Cool Breeze. I have a dog named Zasu who we mostly call Zaz, Beans, Pony and Shitmouth.

He's awfully attached to my mom, and gets quite sullen when she's not home. He sometimes sits and waits for her by the door.

This is from his myspace that I made about two years ago. ::snort::

Dog: Negrita, a rottweiler/little-black-dog mix. Named after a dog we knew in Nicaragua the summer before we got her.

Cat: Abby, she's had a few litters before we got her, so she's a bit flabby.

(Madagascar Day) Gecko: Segunda, she was the second baby one we got from a friend. The first got away.

Fish: Dead, my two-year-old turned off the power strip the other day.

I have a female Jack Russel named Steve. People always complain about this, telling me Steve isn't a girls name. I tell them that I've always wanted a dog named Steve and animals generally don't have gender issues regarding names. Steve hates pandas.

I also have a rat named Yorick (who actually plays with and chases Steve), and two sugar gliders: Banzai and Bastard (guess which one bites).

Aaron has a buncha fish too, but so far they haven't been given names. Well except for ol' Zippy the Goldfish, so named cos he was one of a half dozen that were all supposed to be 'feeders' to entertain the larger more aggressive cichlids Aaron has. The others all got eaten within 2 days, but somehow Zippy has been smart, fast and aggro enough that he's survived for six months now despite horrendously hostile conditions in the big tank. When he was put in there, he was literally nothing but eyeballs and a yolk sac. Now he's over 2" long, chases the other fish around, and eats cichlid food (which is weird cos cichlid food = dried shrimp and goldfish are SUPPOSED to be herbivorous only...).

I half expect to come in some morning and discover he's grown shark teeth or something. Which I'd definitely take a photo of.
posted by lonefrontranger 09 February | 11:43
Just Coya (approx. 2 years). But she's like having two dogs, since she has the OCDness of a Border Collie and the Let's Eat Rocks FUN!!-ness of a lab. If she mellows out enough this year, we'll probably add to the nest.

Mike, you've obviously never seen Aaron's albino plecostomus chasing the little bitz of banana we drop in the tank for him at feeding time. Anything that doesn't get out of his way risks getting suckered to death... it's like Death By Hyperactive Whiskery Peach Vacuum Cleaner (or something like that). Primal!

CitrusFreak, that pic of Fred reminds me of something out of an old film noir. It evokes the same sort of mood as this (much imitated and parodied) painting. Tres awesome!

no pets, but for a while our apartment was infested with a mouse who ran really fast. We named him Zippy.

(I'd really love a bulldog of some sort. I'd name him either Dudley or Dexter).
posted by jonmc 09 February | 12:07
muddgirl: He looks so funny this winter because we didn't get him groomed (that picture is from last year). I wish I had a picture.

His fur is so soft I asked him if I could make slippers out of him. (I put my foot on him and said that - not that I ever would -- should anyone be crazy enought to think I was serious).

This started a whole conversation about Gus turning Gus into "Ton-Ton" and crawling in him to escape the cold. I guess you would have had to be there.

Anyway, he is such a lover. He is my buddy. Loves to play catch and tug-o-war.
posted by Lola_G 09 February | 12:10
youngergirl: sadly I do not have photos of the fish, sounds like I need to embark on a project. Zippy did get put into solitary and spent time in my room for awhile because he was giving one of the other fish in the big tank no end of hell (he's a right bully and if he senses weakness in any of his targets, he chews their fins off). Turns out that fish had something wrong with it anyhow (it died), thus Zippy was returned to the big tank to resume hell-raising.

I have a cat. Her name is Mia.

She's a used cat, so we didn't get to name her ourselves, but have no issue with it.

I can post a pic when I get home.
posted by kellydamnit 09 February | 12:11
I also have a used cat, who arrived with the name of Zoe. Before I knew her name, I was going to rename her Chloe, but once I found out her name, that seemed needlessly confusing. She's a calico and is the cutest cat ever to exist. (Alas, no digital photos to prove this.) While she has no gender issues, I do suspect she may be gay.

BP, Athena and Kayla have awesome faces!

jon, I met possibly the cutest bulldog ever the other morning. Her name was Princess Buttercup.

actually, in my neighborhood, there's this tall, hard looking, all deiseled out dude in a leather jacket who I always see walking his French bulldog down the Boulevard. Whenever the dog stops to do his business, he sniffs everything and walks around in circles before doing his thing, while the guy grumblkes like a long suffering husband. Yeah, Once in a bar, me and a few buddies met this chick with a bulldog named 'Betty' in tow. I bent down, pint of Guinness in hand, to pet the pooch. Betty vigorously licked my face then took a couple enthusiastic laps at my pint. My friend Tony yelled "Jon, don't get the dog drunk, please!"

and that's the last thing I remember clearly. Thankfully, when I woke up there were no unexplained pawprints around. True story.
