That Was the Weller Week That Was: Update!
[More:]Got in to the green room at Jimmy Kimmel! It was packed, so Weller only came in for about half a minute -- said hello to someone right near the entrance, looked around, and then sauntered out. However, in that instant of looking around, he saw me over by the bar (who me, getting a free drink?) and caught my eye (who me, staring at Paul Weller? Never let it be said I cannot multitask), and gave me the Universal Gesture for "Hey Over There, I Acknowledge You in a Friendly Manner" -- you know, the combo chin raise/half smile -- paired with the Raised Glass of Cheers. EEEE!

A little later, Steve White came back in (richat: yep, same amazing drummer he's had since the Style Council days), gave me a big wave and a grin, and marched straight over. We chatted for quite awhile (among the conversation topics: Mexican food, whale watching, football [American and "real"], the awfulness of Posh Spice, the hilarious weirdness of Scientology, and recent art exhibitions), then exchanged email addresses. Honestly, he just couldn't have been friendlier or warmer -- truly a lovely fellow.

The band played two songs at the end of the show, for which we got to be a part of the audience, and that wrapped up Weller Week for me! Once I get pictures from Monday night, I'll post 'em.

All-in-all, it was a wonderful four days -- all three shows were incredible (great setlists with a good combination of Jam, Style Council, and solo songs), he and the band sounded fantastic, and he was obviously having blast (I've never seen him smiling and joking so much in concert!). It was also fantastic to hang out (and drink!) with fans who'd come from all over the world to see this series of concerts (in addition to folks from all over the U.S./Canada, I met fans from the UK/Ireland, Australia, Japan, and Brazil). The entire event was easily the best experience of my life as a music fan.

(Also, an amusing sidenote: found out that Weller's youngest daughter is named Jessamyn.)
That's amazing!...have you done liner notes for anything else?

Wow scody...I am definitely a little jealous. Paul's the man. I thought I recognized Steve's name. Man, he was great as a teenager, and I can't imagine he's lost any chops!

One of my favourite bits of Jam, if the really early video on the Complete Jam DVD set. Paul looks to be 17 or 18, but he's tearing the room down with just vicious rock and roll. God, they were a great band.

I *heart* you scody a million.

So I have a dear friend in Greece who is *infatuated* with Paul Weller. I do not know where she picked it up becase although PW is certainly more popular than in the US, he is definitely not mainstream. Anyhow. I wrote to her a couple of days ago with news about life and such, a very heartfealt email, or whatever that might be for me. She responded with a couple of sentences. One of which reads:
I just hope you managed to go all 3 days to Paul Weller's concerts because I heard he was awesome (N.B. she actually used the english word) in Los Angeles. (N.B. like I didn't!)

Then she proceeded to attach a buttload of PW's pics which filled up my mbox. You can have a couple. Oh well.

I also emailed her links to your comments here. Oh god. My worlds are colliding.

*shakes fist at Weller*

I gotta say, Carmina, that while I am not so down with that scarf, I think Paul is one of the coolest looking grey haired guys in the world. The cherry red SG is such a cool guitar too.

He's the kind of cool that gets (some) hetero guys to realize that some guys are worth at least thinking about it anyway...

Hope that made sense. Ah well. Paul is so cool.

oh sure richat. I love him too! But seriously (ans scody said it too) he has some very faithful following -not the groupy types, more like people who know why they like his music and his attitude.

Oh, and I think he is very cool. Very.

Hee hee... believe me, you are not the first hetero guy to have mentioned this to me in the past few days. After one of the shows, my friend and I went to the Frolic Room (cool old punk rock/classic old Hollywood bar around the corner) to meet up with the crew of overseas Weller fans who'd taken to meeting there. This big Aussie bloke who I'd been chatting with for a few days grabbed me when I walked in the door and said "listen, I thought I was as straight as an arrow, but after seeing that man up there tonight, I wanna f*$% him meself!" I just laughed and said, "oh, I understand!"

have you done liner notes for anything else?

Yep, a couple of Madness compilations, and a few '80s/new wave compilations. There was talk a year or two ago about getting to do some notes for a re-release of Tom Waits' Island trilogy but it got back-burnered. I'll have to get back in touch with my music producer buddy and see if there are any others coming up...

Carmina, what did you think of the NY shows?? And if I'm ever in Greece, I'll have to look up your friend so that she and I can have a little Weller-swoon together!

Yeah, Paul's following reminds me of my other favourite Paul W.

Paul Westerberg.

When I saw Westerberg in Toronto a few years back, there were a contingent of people who were following the tour. Hardcore fans to say the least.
