AskMecha: How much, approximately, does it cost to send a CD from Britain to America?[More:]I ask, of course, because of the Mefi CD Swap thing. Thanks!
Last time I sent one by airmail it was about £1.60 (that was in a jiffy bag). Since then, though, we've had the asinine new sizing thing come in, so it's probably a bit more. If you're sending a lot, do yourself a favour and get a load of customs stickers in advance - you'll need one for every package you send.

That sounds about right, by Airmail (Par Avion). A CD in a jewel case with a light insert will be about 60g, so judging by this, £1.60 is about right.

Add £4.20 for Airsure (tracked service with £500 insurance ['compensation', I'd be amazed if you ever for £500 out of them, though, even if the Post Office counter clerk ate the CD right in front of you, while, between mouthfuls, telling you how 'cheesy' the music was, and giggling, sending shards of shattered plastic ricocheting off the glass partition]).

Or add £3.50 for International Signed For. Not much different from the above, though. I think it's like the difference between Recorded Delivery and Special Delivery (of which Special Delivery is vastly superior, but significantly costlier).

Hah! What a great mental image. One of my swapsetmates last time was from Aus/NZ, so you might want to check those rates too, if funds are an issue.

Oh, one thing to be careful of is the "is there a letter in there?" question. There's different rates for letter and small package and, occasionally, they can be very different. So, if you're sending a CD to a friend with a letter in it, just lie and say there's nothing - you'll find yourself paying more otherwise.
