Songs you've downloaded lately Because nobody goes around humming albums.[More:]

Polyester Bride -- Liz Phair

With a Girl Like You -- The Troggs

Shakin' Street -- MC5

Christmas is a Comin' -- The Shitbirds

Hair of the Dog -- Nazareth

Mating Song of the Big-Headed North American Bar Swine -- The Verbrilli Sound
Shakin' Street, killer song. I also always thought Hair Of The Dog would be great background music for a scene in a seventies prison movie where convicts agrily lift weights.

Jeff Alexander - Come Wander With Me.

Dancin' With Myself - Billy Idol
Baby I Love You - Bonnie Raitt & BB King
Billy Jean - Michael Jackson
Change Partners - Stephen Stills

Paul van Dyk - "Ministry of Sound Radio Session" ...hey, I like it. Upbeat Ibiza kinda sound.

Carl Cox, Westbam, Paul van Dyk - "Live at Love Parade" ...hmmm. eleventy-million pounds worth of music equipment and it still sounds as if it was recorded over by the toilets.

George Harrison - "My Sweet Lord" ...referenced in an article I was reading and I couldn't remember what it was like.

Flux of Pink Indians - "Life After Death", "System Rejects", "They Lie, We Die", "The Fucking Cunts Treat Us Like Pricks", ...trying to get all of the album "All the Arms We Need", among others.

Conflict - "The Ungovernable Force" ...but the recording's terrible. damn damn damn.

Andrews Sisters - "Beat Me, Daddy, Eight to the Bar", "The Jumpin' Jive", "Big Brass Band from Brazil" ...best. voices. evar.

I haven't downloaded anything but (and so much for trying to limit my spending on music this year), I've either recently received or recently ordered:

Singles Going Steady - Buzzcocks
Fuckin' A - The Thermals
Friend Or Foe - Menomena
Worst You Can Do Is Harm - The Long Winters
Afraid of Sunlight - Marillion
Setting Sons - The Jam
I Can't Go On, I'll Go On - The Broken West
The Ultimate Collection - The Kinks
Yoni - Ginger
Make This Your Own - Cooper Temple Clause
Jarvis - Jarvis Cocker
The Good The Bad The Queen - The Good The Bad The Queen
Wincing the Night Away - Shins
Not Too Late - Norah Jones
The Enemy Chorus - The Earlies
Some Loud Thunder - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Tones Of Town - Field Music
Someone To Drive You Home - The Long Blondes

I have a problem

I am tragically un-hip. The only bands I recognize from TheDonF's list are: The Jam, Shins, The Kinks, Patti Griffin, and Yoni!

I just purchased:

Shattered Image - Dolly Parton (one of my most favorite songs EVER. I had to download a version because the version I had was a .wma version. And I needed it for my ipod shuffle.)

The last few things I've bought from iTunes:

I am the very model of a modern Major-General from The Pirates of Penzance, by G&S, performed by The D'Oyly Carte (after stumbling across adrianhon's MeFi song, which is to be sung to this tune)

Bring Us, O Lord God by William Harris, performed by the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge (because I was reminiscing about conducting nice anthems, and this is gorgeous, with words by John Donne)

Symphonic Chorale No. 2, "Jesu meine Freude" by Karg-Elert, performed by Hans Fagius (because I was reminiscing about a 'music I learned in three days' organ recital I'd done, and realised I'd never actually heard this piece played by anyone else)

Don't Stop Believin' by Journey (because it was in Family Guy, and I was ashamed that I didn't own a copy of it)

Mmmm, I'd actually be ashamed of owning that :)

LoriFlA: Some of those bands are fairly new and have just the one album out, ut most are probably not that well-known.
Jarvis is Jarvis Cocker, lead singer of Pulp;
surely you've heard of Norah Jones?;
The Good The Bad & The Queen is Damon Albarn's (Blur/Gorillaz main man) new group;
Field Music is a great UK group;
The Earlies;
Marillion are a great UK group who've been around for years and that I've just got into again after a few years away;
Reindeer Section are a UK-based indie supergroup featuring members of Snow Patrol, Arab Strap, Belle And Sebastian and others;
The Cooper Temple Clause are a UK rock group;
The Long Winters are cool;
The Thermals are a pretty darn good noisy rock band;

I don't know much about The Long Blondes or The Broken West, but the reviews have been excellent;

I saw Robert Gomez support Midlake and he was fantastic; and finally I heard a Menomena track on WOXY and it was stunning. Phew.

Oh - are you sure you know Yoni, as that's actually an album by Ginger, the man behind The Wildhearts, Silver Ginger 5, Ginger + The Sonic Circus and more. It comes with a very suggestive cover :) If you are a WH/Ginger fan, then w00t!

And therein lies our essential difference. Also, for some reason I thought The Reindeer Section was a Canadian thing -- don't know where the hell I got that from.

Really? I had their first album and, whilst perusing your last.fm list realised that I was missing their other one. Wot I have now ordered. It's definitely UK - it's headed up by Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol, Arab Strap are (were - they split last year) Scottish as are Belle+Seb. In fact, looking at this, they're more Scottish than anything else.

Oh yeah, you're definitely right, it was just one of those misfacts that had stuck in my head, probably after misreading something somewhere.

Ah yes, Norah Jones. Of course! For some reason her name wasn't registering.

Not only had I not heard of them (with the slightly ironic exception of Norah Jones), but I wasn't sure which were bands and which were song titles.

Want me to just do a directory list and copy/paste the 4xxx track names here?

It's: album title - artist

*Sigh* - they're all full-length albums, I buy far too much music.

Shakin' Street, killer song.

Thanks! It sounds a little like "Sugar Magnolia," doesn't it? (Or is that a negative ;)

I am tragically un-hip.

Ah, don't worry about it. People who invest a lot of time and energy into seeming hip are emotionally constipated and boring.

I admire Journey for beginning as a bunch of pretentious prog-rockers, and then ditching all that shit and turning themselves into a great arena rock band with a great lead singer.
