Writing to the State Congresscritter? Accomplished. [MI]
I was sitting at home this afternoon after bringing my dog back from the vet before I had to leave the house again. We got a knock on the door and one of the 'volunteers' (they're actually on staff, albeit at a pretty shitty salary) from a local enviro-action group handed me some material and asked that I write a letter to my State Senator and State Rep saying I supported their stance. Done. Here it is:
Dear State Senator name,

This afternoon a well-meaning young man gave a knock on my door. He asked if I would mind writing a letter to you about stating my support for Producer Take-Back Recycling for E-Waste. He also asked for a donation and recommended $25 as a good basis for a household, but that extra $1 per pack cigarette tax is really cutting into our budget, so we don't have much leftover for charity any longer.

Anyhow, I'm sure you'll be inundated with mountains of letters supporting the organization's campaign to impose Producer Take-Back Recycling. Well, maybe not mountains. Young Basil or Cecil or whatever his name was wasn't all that convincing, and, to be honest, a tad pushy.

I won't waste your time quoting the facts and figures that were in the flier that he gave me, since I'm sure most of those other letters will, and I'm kind of skeptical that it'd do much good anyhow. So here's a picture of my dog:

I hope you like it.

Anyhow, I just wanted to let you know that I support The efforts of organization to address the problems of e-waste, and ask that you support efforts to ban computers, TVs, and other e-waste from landiflls, their exportation from TX, and support the development of a recycling program that shifts the cost of recycling to the manufacturers.

Now I just need to print this and stick it on my front door for Chet or Harry to pick up and mail off to you. I really hope he doesn't knock, because I'll be watching the Mavericks game (OMG how good are they this year?) and even though they're playing the lowly Grizzlies, I hate to be interrupted during game time. Please respond to my comments in writing, you funky rapscallion.

Heh. He didn't even come by to pick up my letters. I told him they'd be in the mailbox, which they quite prominently are, and they're still there.

More's the better, though. I have more confidence in them actually getting there now. On the sheets he gave me with all the facts and figures, there's a quote at the end that reads "put your letters in stamped and addressed envelopes by your front door by 8 PM tonight...If you don't mind, please leave your letters unsealed".

Which is 50% of the reason for my response.

I totally support the cause, and I'm sure my letter will be diligently counted and tossed aside like all of the other well-meaning letters, but if you want to go through them and read them before sending them off like some COINTELPRO style mission, you deserve a bit of razzmatazz.

I've more faith in my postal worker, who is a really f'ing cool guy, that they'll be delivered.
