RIP, Molly Ivins. →[More:]

I realize not everyone agreed with her politics or laughed at her schtick. I can tell you from first-hand experience, though, that Molly Ivins was a wonderful, kind, caring person. I had the chance to work with her at the magazine referenced in the link. I was a kid at the time, and stupid. But Molly never failed to be respectful and encouraging and supportive.

She used to drive up to the office in her big red (and old) pickup truck, two standard poodles in tow. She'd slam out of the truck, surrounded by a cloud of cigarette smoke, and burst into the office with a huge smile on her face. She was bigger than life, yet for the entire time I lived in Austin, her name was listed in the phone book.

It's very sad that she's gone.

Oh, Christ, say it ain't so.

One of the things that makes her stand above the rest of the chattering class is that she never lost view of the fact that American (and especially Texan) politics are often completely absurd. She relishes talking about the found humor in the process. I read "Molly Ivins Can't Say That, Can She?" several times, and I giggled wildly each time.

Damn it.

I read a few things by her on recommendation of deadcowdan, and saw her numerous times on television and always found her very entertaining.

Why does she have to die and Bill O'Reilly gets to live? Something wrong there.

I just saw this on a new site, and my immediate thought was of mudpuppie. I don't remember that I ever heard mudpuppie talk about Molly Ivins, or that she had any connection to her, but I suppose it's possible. I just thought of two great ol' Texas Broads. Not that I think mudpuppie is like Molly Ivins was; in fact she's very different, in my imagination, but still, that's what I thought. Sorry pup. RIP Molly.

Molly Ivins was one of my earliest favourite writers and was a big part of getting me interested in politics. She was a gracious, humorous, fierce lady and will be sorely missed.

I'd never heard of Molly Ivins before moving to Texas in 1994 but quickly fell in love with her writing. The world has lost one of the good ones.

I'm such a fan of hers. I'm going to miss her a lot. Rest in peace, Molly. I'm sure she and Ann Richards are up there having a good old time, though, and that thought makes me smile.
