30 January 2007

I Am Engaged! [More:] Last night my gal and I went over to her folks' place for dinner. They told us about the time they drove across Canada in their disintegrating rattle-trap car. At the end of the dinner I said, 'That story got me thinking, maybe [my gal] and I should do a roadtrip for our honeymoon... and of course, before the honeymoon comes..." At which point my future Mother-In-Law jumped out of her seat with a huge smile on her face and gave me a hug. My future Father-In-Law sat blinking, a bit blind-sided, then a huge grin spread across his face. "With your permission--" I said. "I'm thrilled!" My future Mother-In-Law said. "Thrilled thrilled thrilled!"

So yeah, a little old-fashioned of me, I know, but her parents mean a lot to me and I wanted to include them. BUT WAIT! It gets even more old-fashioned! When my grandparents got engaged in Iowa in the early 1940s my grandmother had what was called a 'Five Pound Party:' The prospective groom brings five pounds of chocolate to his sweetheart who then shares the treats with her friends and family. I told my girlfriend about this last year and she, being a chocolate fan, thought it was a great idea. So after dinner we came home and she was surprised to find Ten Pounds of Chocolate that I had arranged throughout the house earlier that day. I pulled out the ring that she had chosen a few days earlier, got down on one knee and proposed.

She Said Yes!!!!
Congratulations! That's so exciting! :D

Aw, y'all (as we said back in The Auld Country, in this case The Auld Country being Texas) are making me blush!

Pinks, the ring has a thin white gold band, an emerald for the center stone (don't ask me what cut-- a friend of mine asked and I just stood there scratching my head) and little diamonds surrounding the emerald.

Thanks, jonmc. I have to admit I was stressing a bit: "Aw man! I gotta think of an awesome way to propose! Let's see... rappelling down a blimp... no... uh..." But then I talked to a buddy of mine (Mefi's own theinsectsarewaiting) and he told me that all I have to do is make sure the proposal is right for us. Once I realized that, the rest just fell into place.

Congratulations! Great story too. I am a little jealous, as mrs richat and I sort of stumbled into engagement. I might have to steal yours story when the little richatlettes grow up and start asking questions!

Congrats! Is the "Five Pound Party" an Iowa tradition? There was an educational short film produced by Iowa State called "The Home Economics Story," that mentions a "Five Pound Party." The short was riffed on by the Mystery Science Theater folks, and fans always wondered what the heck it referred to. Somebody eventually wrote a letter to Iowa State to try to find out, and someone there actually wrote back:

Our office received your inquiry about the promotional film called "The Home Economics Story." According to sources here the reference in the film is to a "five-pound party." Apparently there was an old sorority tradition to have a party and bring a 5-lb. box of candy when you announced your engagement.

Thanks again, everyone. You guys are the best. kyleg, you are right: I've never felt so... complete.

Otis: I don't know if the Five Pound Party was an Iowa tradition or an Iowa State (the school, not the state) tradition. My Grandmother and my Grandfather met and started dating at Iowa State and when they got engaged my Grandfather brought her five pounds of candy and yep, she and her sorority sisters had a party and ate the chocolate.

At my Grandmother's funeral (where I first learned about the 5 pound party during the eulogy) I met a woman who had been on the same residence floor at Iowa State as my Grandmother. I said, "I'd never heard of a 5 pound party before. Sounds like fun." and my Grandmother's friend told me that when she got engaged, she had a Ten Pound Party. Apparently it was because she had already received the ring...

It's funny you mention the Mystery Science Theater fans. I went searching for more information about the 5 Pound Party online and the page with the MST fans riffing about it was all I could find.

In any case, my fiancee (!) and I thought The Five (or Ten) Pound Party sounded like a good idea. Hanging out with friends, eating chocolate... why not? Also, for me, there was something about sharing a tradition with my Grandparents as a way to honor my memories of them and to acknowledge my place in a long family continuum. My Grandparents never got the chance to meet the woman I'm going to marry but they would have loved her, and she would have loved them.
