NYC-Filter: A Circling of the Wagons jonmc just got fired today and will be at Antarctica after 5 pm if you want to buy him a drink and commiserate.[More:]

Alas, I've already got a date with my boyfriend so I won't be there for long, but I hope that most of the rest of you will be able to come.
That sucks mucho. Sorry :-( Don't think I can make it for drinks, but I'm thinking of ya!

I, for one, am really excited for jonmc. A whole world of opportunity just opened up for him. I just know he's going to find some really awesome thing to do with his days that both makes him happy and pays the rent. Jonmc is a tremendous writer, and an all around cool guy, it won't take long at all for him to find something ten trillion times better than what he was doing. Go jonmc!
posted by getoffmylawn 26 January | 11:09
I was thinking the same thing. Starting that music blog was just a small step towards greatness, y'know?
posted by TrishaLynn 26 January | 11:11
I have a friend coming into town right about that time, so sadly I don't think I'll be able to make it.
posted by gaspode 26 January | 11:16
I certainly wish jonmc could be here now to tell us in person; I'm sending my warmest regards, and an earnest hope that he doesn't fall into another crap-hole of negativity like his former job seemed to be.
posted by muddgirl 26 January | 11:17
Me, too, but he had to pack his stuff and exit the building, like, pronto. I doubt they would have let him get back onto his computer. That's what happened to me when I got fired from my first job out here on the East Coast.
posted by TrishaLynn 26 January | 11:20
Wonder if there's some way we could do a communal sort of shout-out to Jon that TL could print and bring along?
posted by richat 26 January | 11:24
Here's to brighter days around that corner, jonmc.
posted by chewatadistance 26 January | 11:27
Can you guys please un-timeout him at this point? The thread is safe and protected and past and the point has been made.

Also, did he actually start that music blog that I told him to start or else I was going to hunt him down and kill him? Link please.

(The music blog wasn't my idea. I just happened to agree with the concept so violently that I was willing to put some force behind it.)

TrishaLynn, was this the layoff he's been expecting for so many months or was it something else?
posted by essexjan 26 January | 11:34
Yeah, but he's stopped doing it.

(the music blog)
posted by gaspode 26 January | 11:35
From what I know, it wasn't connected to the layoffs because 2/5ths of my department is still here.
posted by TrishaLynn 26 January | 11:41
Sheeooot. It sounds like a firing is not the same as a layoff. Of course, I don't know. I'm thinking of the ol' galloot. Cheers.
posted by rainbaby 26 January | 11:43
I'm sorry to hear it, and I'll be thinking of him.
posted by box 26 January | 11:51
What does he drink, again? I'd like to raise him a glass at tonight's Boston meetup.
posted by Eideteker 26 January | 11:55
hopefully this is for the best. I'm gonna try and meetup for a few later on.
posted by Hellbient 26 January | 11:57
What does he drink, again?

Mostly? Beer.
posted by TrishaLynn 26 January | 12:00
Poor jon, not a good week. I wish him the best and will send happy thoughts his way.

if i didn't have this damnable cough and cold, i might 'a tried to make it into the city. regardless, i'm feeling for you, dude.

but jonmc, if you're reading this, i think you would make a terrific music journalist, and you can use your blog for writing examples. i *may* be able to recommend a few editors you can pitch to for freelance-y gigs, and i can definitely recommend some job sites for permanent positions.

pips has my regular e-mail address. people are right: this opens up a world of opportunity for you. you can do all sorts of kickass things, and this just may be the door/window scenario that pushes you ahead.
posted by brina 26 January | 12:48
jon, I hope this is just the begining of something much better for you. Still, have a few pints lad. I'll host one to you later.
posted by arse_hat 26 January | 12:55
He posted something to the blog yesterday.
I'm sorry about this jonmc, but it looks like the stuff brina's suggesting is more up your alley.
I'll be there...I finally sent the wedding gift off last night.
posted by brujita 26 January | 13:12
jon, what can I say. This sucks. After holding out for so long, too. As others have said above, I hope this spurs you on to greater things, doing something you love.
posted by elizard 26 January | 13:15
Sorry, man. Sux. Although, honestly, I'm also a little bit jealous.

Does firing vs. layoff affect severence pay/unemployment?

Does anybody know if he has a paypal account? I want to send enough to cover a beer. Maybe I'll just try the email addy listed in his profile, unless somebody can tell me different. (My email is in my profile....thanks.)
posted by danostuporstar 26 January | 13:37
jon, like many I don't know if you're reading this, but I do know you will bounce back buddy. You are talented and definitely not a quitter. I'll raise a glass to you tonight my friend.

I'll be there.
posted by Lola_G 26 January | 14:10
man, that sucks jon :\ good luck in finding something you like doing soon.
posted by stynxno 26 January | 14:15
Good luck jon, I'm cheering for you. I wish I could join you for a beer, but I'll have one for you here in Oregon.
posted by pieisexactlythree 26 January | 14:32
Aw, jon, that's a bummer. Your loss, DumbCo!!
posted by jrossi4r 26 January | 15:00
Hang on in there. You're probably feeling like a big bag of crap right now, but it will get better. And, like loads of other people have said, this could really be the thing you've been needing to do something really, really cool.
posted by TheDonF 26 January | 15:00
Here's to jonmc: All that and a bag of crap!
posted by danostuporstar 26 January | 15:02
*gasps* He did do the music blog! Yay!
posted by casarkos 26 January | 15:52
jon - ah, y'never much liked the job anyways. On to bigger and better and cooler things. For now, I'd suggest maximizing your Slack Potential and hang loose for a bit. I'll be drinking about ya tonight guy! you too, Pips!
posted by Zack_Replica 26 January | 15:52
(((jon)))

I'm sure this is a good thing for you. Wish I was in NYC tonight.
posted by deborah 26 January | 16:02
I'm not gonna add to the chorus of voices that think this might be the best thing for jonmc. Tonight, it's crap, and I feel for jonmc and Pips. I find it's best to go ahead and be pissed and hurt right when bad things happen to me and mine, and I recommend it, as a strategy, tonight.

Bottoms up, and up, and up, and up, and up, and up, as much as your kidneys can stand tonight, jonmc. Tomorrow, today should be a hazy, worthless memory, that you see through the bottom of a glass darkly, and yet have survived.

If greatness awaits, fuck it, let it wait one more night.
posted by paulsc 26 January | 16:05
I'm with Paulsc on this, but in my brief phone conversation with jon (which seemed to be going on while or immediately after he was fired) he sounded fairly amused and pleased (and a little manic)... not the moment to take a baseline reading of mood, of course. I'm heading over in a few minutes and I'll buy him one on all of you.
posted by Divine_Wino 26 January | 16:46
Make it something top shelf. I'm good for it.
posted by It's Raining Florence Henderson 26 January | 16:49
DW, please give him my regards!
posted by pieisexactlythree 26 January | 16:49
Bad as things are now, it'll get at least twice that much better later.

Aw, jonmc...

(somebody buy him a coke-heck, make it a pepsi-in my name, willya? And I won't be responsible if he adds anything to it. *wink*)
posted by bunnyfire 26 January | 17:19
I wonder if this had anything to do with what's happened?
posted by TheDonF 26 January | 17:35
You're free, Run-JMC! Now get out there and kick some serious punk-rawk inspired ass! Take names and hostages.

This is how many famous people got the inspiration to change the world. You're a fierce fuck, Jon, and no one can bring you down.

posted by Lipstick Thespian 26 January | 17:48
What a shitty week indeed for you.

It's never pleasant when you get shit canned, even though other doors open for you.

I commiserate jon and raise a pint in your name tonight to a brighter future.

posted by alicesshoe 26 January | 18:53
Poor Jon! Even if DumbCo was aptly named, getting fired still sucks. I hope he finds something else quickly, either that, or he greets Pips each night with a nice dinner and him wearing nothing but an apron.

Oh, shit. I just came back from work and I see this. Jon we are here if you need something. Hope you are doing OK. It will get better.
Take care buddy.
posted by carmina 26 January | 22:40
Jon, I'm sorry man. But screw that place (wherever it was!) anyway! You're better off without them, and it's their damn loss.

I'd buy you a drink if I could. Geographical and legal problems aren't letting me do so, but have a drink for me tonight and I'll have a drink for you. We'll each be there in spirit.
Ha.
Spirit.
Bad liquor pun.
::sigh::

Take care, man.

I just quit a job which I didn't particularly enjoy myslef a couple of months back Jon, so I know how it feels. But it does get better, and with friends like these, the transition is that much smoother.
