What do you do to feel better when you're sad?
Feed pigeons? Skip stones? I really really need some reasonably easy/inexpensive cheering up.
There's always drugs, alcohol, retail therapy, chocolate, and sex (not necessarily all at the same time though), but I like exercise. It really lifts my mood and spirits, and it's good for you, and free. /Pollyanna
Sun, yoga, exercise, meditating, reading, taking photographs, and playing video games are how I like to unwind or get to a happy place.
Loooooooooots of walking. And lots of melancholy music. I know some people say listening to sad music is depressing, but I find that when I'm sad, it's heartening to know that other people have felt this way. Listening to happy music just makes me feel more isolated and out of step with the world; sad music, all day long like a soundtrack, generally makes me feel more in tune with my surroundings and ends up improving my mood.
Write yourself a note listing some of your wonderful qualities. Take a walk and look UP. (Look at the tops of trees, chimney pots, etc. I swear this helps.) Take yourself out to a cheerful movie and sneak in homeade popcorn, gourmet chocolate, and a flask of whiskey. Invent a simple art project.
See thread above. And yes, what everyone else said. Hang in there. I am just (today) starting to come out of a deep depression that has been hounding me for a week. I started the week just thinking about suicide way too much (whoa, don't worry, I'm ok, not going to do anything stupid).
Today I went home for lunch. It's cold, bitter. But with a bright sun. And I took Autumn, our dog out, and she sniffed around a little, and then looked at me with a sparkle. She kicked up and started racing around the yard, playing in the snow, wagging her tail and smiling.
Aww, hugs loiseau. This kind of sadness is the worst for me (I noticed your comment elsewheres). You know, go out. Go see friends. Talk, incessantly. Get yourself physically tired. Any way you can think right now. That works wonders for my emotional stresses.
"There are orange trees elsewhere too that make oranges" is a greek saying.
Oh, yes, dog parks! It's hard to be sad at a dog park. (My cat is definitely comforting, but goofy doggie-dom is so wonderful that I have to get mine through other people's dogs.)
Getting into the sunlight. Really. It has a physiological effect. That, and talking to a good friend, and/or praying...not to mention that watching something funny on Tv or online helps a bunch.
And of course chocolate therapy is ALWAYS called for.
Writing frightening verse to a bucktoothed girl in Luxembourg usually does the trick...
But seriously, I generally don't try to snap myself out of it, but rather try and figure out what exactly is making me sad. Maybe jot some thoughts down. That or just kind of cherish it. That might sound strange or gothy, but I just think of it as part of life. I know it won't last, and I guess it feels good to feel something.
And yeah, I guess i usually put on some music that reflects my mood, but I always do that anyway.
