IRC lag is usually a function of how you are connecting to the Internet, and how many hops off you are from a Slashnet server, for the #bunnies channel. Who's your ISP, what IRC server are you using, and have you characterized your TCP/IP route to that server? Sometimes, it's as simple as pointing your IRC client at another, less heavily loaded server. Comcast, particularly in FL, sucks in terms of network lag, because of all the backhauling and proxy insertions they do in their network. For me, 28 friggin' hops to alternet peering in Atlanta from Jax, lots of days, for getting to friggin' Google, fer chrissake, the most heavily cached Web page in the known universe. It's a dopey, dopey ISP these days, if that's who you use, to say nothing of the sad, sad state of their DNS service.

Turns out we had DSL lite. Unbeknownst to me, my husband upgraded to "super high speed" DSL a few days ago. It hasn't kicked in yet.
